how often do you actually flip your flip flop hub
 

I commute with 76 gear inches. My commute has some gnarly hills, so I don't want to gear it any higher. However, that other side of my hub is beggin for another cog. I sometimes do flatter rides where it seems I'm just spinning out and I'm sure I would be going faster with a few more gear inches. Trouble is, I'd actually have to stop and flip it around...OK so maybe I'm whining, but I'm just curious if any of you actually ride around with two cogs on your flip/flops and how often you switch em around.

sadly, never, but then again it's a fixed free and I don't have brakes. I'm not bold enough for that.

I'll only flip it mid-ride if it's a long ride with long sustained climbs and descents. Otherwise on other rides I'll just ride the side with the appropriate gear inches for that particular ride. I normally run 69 and 78 gear inches, both fixed on the flip flop. My other non-flip flop wheels are geared somewhere in-between.

I flip mine on my mountain rig. fixed/free, depending on how I'm feeling. never on my road rigs.

the free side of my formula was an extra cog carrier.

I've never flipped once. I buy fixed/fixed hubs just incase I strip a side. That way I don't have to build a new wheel.

i do it twice every time i ride my bike to the velodrome! 50X17 there, 50X15 on the track, 50X17 home. its annoying having to do this, but not as annoying as having to swap cogs or driving the the 2 miles when i could have ridden there in the same amount of time.

Rode a flipflop from last august until yesterday. Rode the freewheel side for two short periods (two weeks + 1 week) Never thought of flipping it again since last december. I guess you could say I carried a freewheel around for zero reason. Just got it really dirty through the winter, that's all.
BTW, they are both 16t, so adapting to terrain was out of the question.

i have a fixed/free flip flop. so far i can't say i'm a huge fan of the freewheel. that could be due in part to the gear being too low, but i found that i really didn't like not being able to use backpressure, and hitting the brakes and then accellerating felt clumsier than regular fixed slow and go.

I've flipped mine about 4 times. I just stay on the lower ratio like a ***** these days. I'd rather spin then mash.

Not very often. When I do an out and back and the wind is 20+ mph I will sometimes flip it.

When I know I am going to ride with fast roadies I will flip it.

My usual is a 42x16 and the flip is a 15.

Worst thing is you usually get your fingers really dirty. I try to find an old paper or plastic bag so my fingers don't get really greasy. Same as changeing a flat.

Use rubber gloves for that. Cheap, small, effective. When you're done you remove it by turning it inside out and don't smear grease in your pockets while you carry it to the nearest trash bin. Cuz you don't throw it away, do you:rolleyes:

I've got a fixed/fixed wheelset. I keep it either at 15/17 or 15/18. I do end up flipping it more when I'm traveling. have kinda gotten where I can flip the thing and use the wrench to 'handle' the chain.... no mess

Mine's fixed-free, with nothing on the free side. Never flipped.

Fast gear: 40/15
Slow gear: 40/16

I flip it to slow when:
-I hurt myself but still want to ride
-I need to tow something on the BOB trailer
-I'm going for a seawall cruise with people on choppers/cruisers etc.

16t on the drive side.
18t suicide on the other just in case.
Never been flipped

I only recently got a 15t for the other side of the existing 17t (48t chainring)
I got the 15t for the fast flat club rides I do as the pace often goes over 29 with sprints higher. If a ride will be flat or with gently rolling hill or only a few short steep climbs, I use the 15t.
But for the hill climb routes (long with some steep sections) I use the 17t.
I decide before the ride.

I have 48x15. I used to have a 16t freewheel on the other side, which I never used ever. I just replaced it with a 13t fixed cog and have now used it once, but I usually use the 15 for cruising. I use the 13 for suffering.

49x17 for the street flipped to (49-52)x15 for the track

I do this when I am at home. On the road I never think to bring the gloves with me. Maybe I will tuck a few away in my seat bag!

Same here...I ride 47x16 on the street (~77 gear inches) and 47x14 on the 'drome (~88 gear inches). Like Roscoe I use my wrench to handle the chain so my hands stay slightly cleaner.

never. I got a fixed/free. There's no need to ever flip it on my daily commute, or just cruising around. And i dont have a brake right now either, so i'd have to put that on before i flipped it. If i were to do another real long ride, like to the shore again (80-100 miles, depending on which shore point) I'd probably flip it over to the free and throw on a brake

i have fixed/free and have used the freewheel side once since i bought it. i already had the freewheel and i guess it's nice to know that it's there just in case the fixed side strips some day.

I'll flip mine the second I find a 1/8" half-link. I'll stop by a few stores tonight. I'm running 42/16, soon to be 42/17 because that's what's on the other side, and I'm mashing on the hills. I have a hilly E/W commute, but when I ride into the city (DC) it's flat and I'd probably stop and flip. I have to say, on an empty MUP today at lunch, 42/16 was PERFECT for a nice little screaming 20 miler on slightly rolling hills.
