Two Brakes?

SO one day i go to the LBS to pick up my bike (and new parts and stuff)
and the bike shop guys says to my father that i should be riding two brakes
WTF
so my dad makes me add a rear brake (iv'e always had 1) now i've got this thing that looks like a confused road bike

Any comments? thoughts? whatever?
general discussion about brakes?

Philatio 09-29-06 05:26 PM

bicycle 09-29-06 05:31 PM

Nothing wrong with running two brakes on a fixed gear. It's not strictly necessary, but nice when you're spinning like mad down a steep hill. Road levers with hoods are mighty comfy.

As far as how your bike looks, whatever. It's not a track bike if you're riding it on the street anyway, so who cares.

roughrider504 09-29-06 05:37 PM

If you lock up your back wheel with the brakes, remember your legs lock up in that position. When your tire stops skidding, your legs start moving. If you are not expecting it, this could be a bad situation.

bicycle 09-29-06 05:38 PM

yeah that's happened

roughrider504 09-29-06 05:40 PM

Just keep it on to please your dad, but learn to just use the front brake mostly. Nothing wrong with 2 brakes.

sers 09-29-06 05:41 PM

if you have a flip flop rear hub, you could toss on a freewheel for kicks

Serendipper 09-29-06 05:46 PM

Hate to tell you, but your bike looks good set up that way...it's a badass fixed gear road bike, so don't complain.

You are a victim of low-level internet brainwashing. Please report to the independant thinker re-conditioning lab on the third floor....

That is what I would do. Coasting can be fun too. Bombing down a hill is a real blast.

Ha ha so true victim myself (been doing a lot of looking for deep v’s) *your bike looks great.
Cheers

Listen bicycle(and btw I can't believe no one had grabbed your username b4) the best thing for you to do is what ever you dad says, trust me on this one.

Learn_not2burn 09-29-06 07:42 PM

Don't worry about the second brake. It looks like you ride so much and so hard that you need a second brake to bring your badass-self to rest. Nobody will give you **** for that my friend. (I'm completely serious, it looks perfectly good.)

+1

Listen to the old man. He may not be right, but so what. Maybe you'll like riding on the hoods. It's hard to do that with only one brake.

Nice looking bike.

I'm a dad (48) make him happy and leave it or you can push it and dump the brake and leave the hood (next time grind off the cable gromets?

you're right, that IS a confused road bike!. what happened to the shifters? and the outer chainring?

Boss Moniker 09-30-06 09:24 AM

Did you just add the road drops? Because they would look weird with only one brake/hood. I think that unless you're running triathalon brakes off bullhorns (and it doesn't even matter that much), everything else looks better with just one. And you seem to have the brazeon stops for the cable.. If you were to go bullhorns, or sawn off and flipped drops, I'd say dump the rear brake and kill the brazeons, get a nice brake lever for the front. And take off that bloody bottle cage.. who needs water?

The bike still looks sweet as a fixie, but I never like road drops on a fixed gear. It's up to you, it all boils down to preference.. besides your dad's thoughts anyway.

Learn_not2burn 09-30-06 11:00 AM

Road drops on a fixed gear are fine. Keep the water bottle holder on there. Like I said it actually shows you go on decent length rides.

Im a parent. Parents look at stuff differently than thier kids.
Leave the bike the way it is, especially if your dad put out
the $$$$ for it. It looks great and has decent stoppability.
You'll understand a little better a few years from now. :D

Phil B 09-30-06 11:39 AM

i like my road drops. they're more comfy than track drops, even if they don't look as cool.

Learn_not2burn 09-30-06 11:50 AM

Yup. road bars FTW. style isn't everything.

schnee 09-30-06 12:02 PM

I think it looks awesome the way it is. You're stressing over stuff that doesn't matter.

Then again, I'm probably old enough to be your dad.

(sigh)
