And yes I cannot empathize with people that do reckless things which put OTHER peoples safety at risk. They get what they deserve and hopefully noone else is hurt in the process. In other words I tacoed my wheel and bruised some ribs because I wanted to see how fast I could make it around a BMX track on my pista makes me sorry for you. I was trying to run a red light at full speed using the "turn with traffic" method and I broke six bones, totaled my bike and can't ride for 9 months gets absolutely no sympathy.

Those that can't deal with hearing that are probably so entrenched in their pro-bke entitlement that nothing it going to change thier opinions anyway. It's a war out there and anything that benefits them is justified because other forms of transportation are inferior. If they ignore me, oh well. If I really cared I might make a new account but I don't.

section 1) still doesn't make it right, or effective. you take the same devil-may-care attitude toward advocacy, that your opponents take to riding, and yet you somehow think you will fair better?

section 2) those people are all in a process of growth and learning, we should help them, not try to make them feel stupid. i'm sure they feel stupid enough already. you can't make a tree grow faster by pulling on it.

section 3) just because someone can't deal with your snide remarks, doesn't mean they are anything other than human. i am sure you could persuade people, and be a great advocate, if changed your methods. but of course, you "don't care". sad.

If he is seen there is a pretty decent chance that the driver will take some sort of evasive maneuver that will endanger himself and others. The same danger exists when cyclist blow through lights or stop signs.(I almost saw a rearending due to this last week. The cyclist was nice enought to flip off the driver when he got honked at too.) Which brings me to my second point about effective advovacy. As long as enough cyclists continue to behave like that advocacy will be seriously hindered by the ill will they engender. I think more needs to be done to educate drivers regarding cyclists rights to be on the road. But such work will never be effective as long as the general opinion is that cyclists are *******s who think they are entitled to do whatever they want on the road.

you talk alot, and you have a "know it all" attitude. . . . .you should make a book of this useless diatribe. And for the sake of you not being a hypocrite, i hope you practice what you are "preaching". I would expect you to wear a reflective vest, have a mirror, use proper hand signals and have a functioning horn on your bicycle; otherwise you are not a responsible cyclist, and could be damaging the movement by looking like you dont care. . . .

go ride. . .

huh? How is basing my opinion of people on the things they do at all devil may care.

They are adults they are responsible for thier own actions. Growth and learning are fine but an adult acting recklessly with little regard for others deserves no sympathy. Hopefully they will grow from the experience and not act in such a fashion again. But doing things like placing blame on others or softening the bitter reality of the situation will in no way help them do so. Judging by the fact that some of them are involved in these incidents repeatedly I think it's safe to say that if anything they need less understanding rather then more. Maybe if admiting to riding like that was cause for ostracization rather then sympathy they would indeed feel stupid enough.

My remarks regarding safety are rarely snide. Biting, and to the point, yes snide no. Sometimes they are caustic but they rarely start out that way. Only when people exihibit continued disregard or recalcitrance are they such. Given the atmosphere most of these people surround themselves with it is highly unlikely that any interweb criticism will change their minds.

Regarding my own riding. I never council anything I don't do myself. I am by my own definition a "responsible rider."

Hating things is a waste of time. I only hate the mofo who stole my bike.

I love the following.
1. Mountain Dew
2. Biking in traffic.
3. Biking on open roads.
4. Biking offroad (though I don't do it much)
5. I'm going to buy a $40 BMX next weekend. Not that I know how, but it'll still be fun.
6. I love quartermile sprints over on 16th and Damen, YAY!! they start in 10 minutes.

Have fun everyone.

I know that they're just concerned for my well-being and trying not to hit me, but it's still aggravating. At least they're not flying by with mere inches to spare, though.

Yes i hate this too, when cars are being too dumb and hesitant to go by you when there's plenty of room.

It's hilarious when you're biking down the street and someone will yell at you "GET IN THE BIKE LANE!!" when there is obviously no bike lane. Yes, this has happened before

someone once said, "There'll always be haters, that's the way it is. Hater *****z marry hater *****es and have hater kids."

illzkla 09-30-06 08:31 PM

i hate when kids on bikes think that someone going the RIGHT way down a oneway city street at 20mph wants to play chicken.

and i really hate the turn signal thing...but maybe im just too reliant on cars being dependable. cars < bikes

b)brakeless fixed with platform pedals. especially on bikes with big gear ratios.

I saw both of these yesterday on my ride through downtown. I didn't get a good look at the first A-type, but it could have been a coastie.

Add to that the ******bag on the costie riding while talking on his cellphone to his friend about how some queer-looking guy is doing a trackstand on his road bike (ie: me). Ph34r my Deep-Vs. Then I watched him ride off down a sidewalk the wrong way on a one-way. I guess he's never seen Veloshop's pink and black team kit.

There's an article related to this on bikeportland.org right now. I didn't have any of the cops I passed ticket me for taking a lane yesterday, but traffic was only moving at 20mph tops.

I don't hate anyone on a bike - unless it is mine and they just stole it.

if I am ever in ATL, you got a "yo" coming - red beards, YO.

i've been gone and missed this thread's blossoming...but i dunno, i'd also rephrase it as "it annoys me because it just isn't goddamn smart".

I hate that ...
...I work across the street from a hospital. I have to look out for debris and puke. At the last red before the hospital, I've lost count of puking passengers.
...My dog will chew up my chair, boxers, and flip flops. But he will not tear up any of my old bike gear (shoes, helmet). If he did, my wife couldn't complain about me buying new stuff.
...in all my searching, the dumpster here only serve up Xmart bikes, or the old, stamped, gas pipe, Monkey Ward/Sear/Whites bikes.
