Someone stole my bike
 

I had a Varsity with a rotafixed cog. I came back to my apartment today and the bike is gone. I am sad because this bike has been with me, in various styles, since the start of my college career. It has never been locked up in five years, and yes I know this was stupid and I am asking for it, but it still sucks. I have been thinking of ways to destroy somebody or the bike, if need be, when I find it or them. I have been thinking of just carrying a wrench with me and unscrewing the wheel nuts so that the person who stole it loses control and faceplants in the middle or the road. I have also been thinking about just carrying my extra u-lock with me so that when I do find it I can lock it up and get it later, which seems like the most sensible option. I am confident that I will find it because I live in a small town and if someone stole it to use I will eventually see it. What else could you recommend to really stick it to the other person riding my bike.


Just wanted to add that I reclaimed my bike tonight. I was riding home today and saw it leaned up against a house. I went back tonight and took it back. It is a little beat up by I have been building a huge parts box that last couple of months. Back to another 5 years of no locking up.

Walk with a cane and stick it in the front wheel if you see the guy ride by. You'll have a helluva truing job on your hands afterwards, though:)

... But at least the frame will still be in good shape. It is a Varsity, after all.

Do you want the bike back or not? If not, then why get upset?

Um, why not just take it home? Plus, if it *already* has a lock on it when you find it (by it's thoughtful new owner), do you think he will come back and unlock his lock so you can take the bike?

I'm not being evil...My bike was stolen last week. A hella nice CX bike that was locked, but the pro took the entire rack. It still didn't get a pity/anger thread from me. I survived.

I had a nice Lemond roadie stolen a few months ago so I can relate to the pain of a bike being stolen, but you have got to be kidding me!

Just go piss all over the bike if you find it, you never seemed to care about it before, why start now?

Guys, I'm so pissed off right now, I put this stack of 20's on the ground (only five of them but they were under a rock), and someone finally decided to take them! I mean no one had taken the 20 dollar bills before for the last five years, but damn! I plan on looking for the theif with my extra wallet and hopefully I can stop him when I see my 20 dollar bills!

Guys: It was a suicided Varsity. Not quite a stack of 20's. More like a couple 1's with a few nickles to weigh it down that somebody took when you were planning on using that money to pick up a slice. Now you didn't lose much money, but you're missing that nice cheesy-saucy-pizza action.

Your bike got stolen. Regardless of whether or not 'it's your fault,' that still sucks.

I've had lots of bikes like that that I never lock (theft isn't too bad where I live). That's WHY I have bikes like that so I don't have to lock them. The bikes cost less than a good lock, and the convenience of leaving them unlocked outweighs the risk of losing them. On the other hand I've got a friend who got his bike stolen from work, and replaced it with a Schwinn Collegiate which he bought for $60. He always locks it now, and he's right to do so. If you care if it gets stolen, put a lock on it.

^^ yeah, I locked up at home, on the front porch, about half the time with my roadbike. My mountian bike was sitting in the bushes to the side of the porch unlocked, for most of a year, but I cracked the deraillur in half, so it wasn't ridable anyways.
I can understand not locking your bike up at home, in a low bike-thievery neighborhood, especially if there's people coming in/out of your house a lot. but 5 years? wow... that's impressive it didn't get dissapeared before that.

actually even my beater bikes get locked up at home. I mean overnight? Come on! I used o keep them in the garage, now at my new place they are locked to a pole in the parking garage. My nice bikes sleep inside with me where it's warm and safe, and I can caress them lovingly when I wake up trembling in the night. Sorry, but leaving a bike outside and unlocked at like 2 am for days , weeks, months at a time is just ASKING for it to get taken.

Well, to be fair...your "beater" bike is a fly ass Triumph 3-Speed with a Brooks and Scorcher bars.

If I were an ass hole, I would steal it. Please show the nice folks what I'm going on about....

I think the best thing to do would be to call a news conference. Get the local media involved and maybe they can produce some tips that will catch the thief. In all honesty he has probably taken the bike and left the country by now but many countries have extradition policies that could could eventually land him back here in the U.S.

Varsities are still very popular in Vietnam so I'm guessing that's where it will end up.

WHY DIDN'T YOU HAVE THE BIKE LOCKED UP. ****, I would have taken the bike if I just saw it there without a lock. Who in their right mind wouldn't lock up a bike that they love. That'd be like sending your two year old to the playground by itself.. Sort of..

Well, in the case of the Varsity it's like sending your autistic Thirty-something year old kid to the mall without a ride home or a cell phone after getting them wasted on Robotussin...and the mall closes in ten minutes....yeah, or something like that.:p
