i have a stem like that and was kind of psyched out by it at first, but started riding it and haven't had any issues with smashing the boys on it.
i do somehow wack my knee on the edge from time to time.

They're nicer than bearings made out of dried balls of dog poo, but not as nice as the rocket ship kind.

I got to fondle some ceramic bearinged Phils at the NAHBS. Imagine holding the axle with your left hand, and spinning the hub with your right. Then imagine it spinning and spinning and spinning. There's no lube in there, and right little friction either. I think the races are specially hardened steel, and the ceramic balls are, well, really hard, so they last forever.

I love that bike. My only critique would be to ditch the Nitto **** and get some Cinelli or 3TTT bars/stem. I'd definitely consider having Mercian build me a frame if I had the loot.
