Swapping quick-release for solid axle
 

I figure I'd ask this here since a number of you have probably done this before. I just bought a solid axle to replace the qr one on my suicide fixed gear wheel, I got the axle and nuts from loosescrews.com. They're both 10x1, axle and nuts, but they go together really loosely. I screw the nuts on and there's play in them, a noticable amount. Like, you can rock the nut up and down, side to side enough to make it click. What's up with that? Anyone ever experience that? These are metric, right? Is there a standard size that's really close but not quite that they might have packed the wrong nuts?

I'm guessing I shouldn't use them, right?

Sounds bad to me. Shimano makes 10x1 axles and nut, you may be better off buying a set for peace of mind. (Here the axle cost me $10, which is a lot but what can you do)

matching axles and bolts sould have no play in them at all...

I hope I never have to see the dude's bike who think's clicking noises are totally normal.

Well, some (=little) play in threaded interfaces is normal, I think. Hard to tell over the net how much play you have, ya know. You noticed it, so it sounds bad.

there shouldn't be that much play, especially on something so important. there is so much vibration there that it will definitely come loose at some point.

BTW, the park site has a pic of two threads with diff pitch. The caption under one says "FINE THREAD". The other: "COURSE THREAD". LOL

From what I gather, it sounds like something I wouldn't ride.

If the cones and axle spacers fit snug enough on the axle, then the problem is with your nuts.

Checking it w/ some other cones, inner locknuts (not the ones from the acctual hub in question) it seems to be mainly the nuts. There's a slight amount of play with the other stuff but nothing I would consider odd.

So, easy to figure that out, my brain just wasn't working so thanks, folks.

Onward to new nuts!

That much play shouldn't happen in any situation, look for different nuts.
