If anyone was wondering about those SPD platform pedal adaptors...

These things.

Well, they pretty much suck. They're made by Wellgo, I have wellgo SPD pedals, and they barely stay in on their own, and don't work at all when I pedal. They may work better, or worse, for you, I dunno much about pedals.

i bought a set and couldnt even get them on. the plastic is a peice of ****.

LóFarkas 10-07-06 09:50 AM

The Shimano 520 sometimes comes with a similar adaptor, which also sucks but maybe not as hard. I blame you for wanting to ride with tennis shoes:p

Yeah, I know, but there are a few times where it'd be really nice not to have to carry my normal shoes with me on short rides. I'm gonna go down to my LBS and maybe find some worn cleats and attach em to these POS's, and hopefully get some use out of them

RedDeMartini 10-07-06 10:46 AM

um, guys they are made for test rides. They are not meant to be sold. They are also designed to fail very quickly. Is someone selling them? If you want to ride with regualr shoes why not set up the correct pedals?
If not, SPD's and other clipless are problematic (you are multiplying the weak links in the chain).
Why not just get some MKS, w/mountain clips.

euphoria 10-07-06 11:03 AM

I made a thread about them not too long ago. I'm definitely holding off until I order some Winwood Decksters, but even then I'm still debating if it's worth it. Makes me miss my Looks. The platform was big enough that you could ride with normal shoes without a problem.

Shimano makes a more $ and maybe not any better version

i ended up getting a set of these powergrips. they rock...if ever really want to get a good ride in..its not that hard to switch my spd's in.

Why do you say they aren't supposed to be sold? Nashbar is selling them.

the ones that came on my trek 520 were ok. but they won't fit any of my other spd pedals.
if you buy them and try to retrofit, good luck.

years ago i went looking for some sort of cheap pedal adaptors for my spds on my MTB and all three shops had these behind the counter but they also all told me that they are only for test rides and that they are considered disposable. Nashbar is definitely pushing the envelope by trying to sell these things. BTW i have seen them used many times and they tear up VERY quickly, like a few times in and out of the pedals.

Seems like it would be faster to just clip in some of those plastic adaptor plates.

or put on some cycling shoes and stop whining like a ninny.

edit: short jaunts like that is what long boards were made for.

Yep, I heard that! Yo!
But, what if the dude wants to ride it to work and doesn't want to take any extra shoes along. That big pedal wrench is going to take too long. So, pedal wrench is no match for cheap plastic pedal adaptor plate that sucks. One takes too long to do, the other doesn't. Word to you moms.

holy rejects batman.. it takes like 30 seconds with that park champ.. those plates are a pain in the ass to get in the pedal by the way

this is also why a few bikes is a great idea

30 seconds? No way dude. Pedals are a beeyotch to take off. Even with a huge levered pedal. It's going to take like 10 minutes minimum. It's got to take at least 30 seconds just to grease the threads of the new pedal. And yYou got to remember to put on the new pedals teee-ight. Who else here can take off their pedals and put on some new ones in 30 seconds? Seriously, we are realistically looking at 10-15 minutes. I could go down to the store and get my goods and be back by then.

In Absentia 10-14-06 10:08 PM

What kind of pedals are you using? It takes me about a minute, maximum, to change pedals, even with greasing the threads.

If you timed me, greased toothbrush and pedal wrench/6 mm allen in hand, I could probably do it in no more than 1-1 1/2 minutes. Are you a sloth or just really protective of your NOS steez? Also, those plastic things are incredibly easy to install and remove with a screwdriver as a leverage device between the tab on the platform and the spring of the pedal. Use brain in head, young apprentices.

12XU 10-14-06 10:13 PM

Man, I just had a good chuckle imaginging bellweather tightening rather than loosening his pedals in an attempt to take them off in all of his excruciating fervor.

vomitron 10-14-06 10:22 PM

seems like you could make some platforms like this out of wood in about 5 minutes with an electric saw/japanese pull saw.

sloppy robot 10-14-06 10:31 PM

holy **** this is funny.. dont make me shoot a how too video .. and you dont need to grease them every single time.. theres grease on the threads and in the cranks.. andthey only have to be as tight as one good pull on the park wrench

other tricks.. get them both loose.. put down wrench.. hold both pedals and spin cranks.. 2 at once.. same for putting them on

WakeUpOnFire 10-14-06 10:36 PM

10 minutes to change pedals? Are you nuts?
