MKS track vs GR-9

Gonna buy one or the other. Any opinions on which is better? I think the big tab on the GR-9s might make them easier to get into.

MKS track = sylvans?

ch0mb0 10-09-06 10:16 PM

you get used to flipping either one, tab or not.

GR9's feel a little easier on the foot, but are smaller. Sylvans are pretty solid and allow for double straps..

i got some GR-9s and i love them. very comfy, very soild feeling and with correct toe clip placement your foot is in a constant "sweet spot" on the pedal giving you good power and stability at all times as far as i have experienced. i always read that they were good for soft soled shoes too and they in fact are. i have a pair of diesel remy's which are incredibly soft/thin soled and i have yet to feel any discomfort from the GR-9s. I have seen double straps run on them, but i believe you might have to use one of those DIY double strap holders, you know the little bits of leather sewn together to make a "harness" type deal for the straps.

gr-9's+ MKS mini clips= best ever!!!

jacobpriest 10-09-06 10:56 PM

mini clips are ******** imo.

and you can run ghetto doubles without the leather thing but its easier with it. the easiest would be real doubles.

if you have wide or big feet the GR9 aren't for you. Feels like riding on a speedplay in sneakers, nothing under anything but the very ball of your foot. But then again if you have wide feet you're probably reaching for the road or even touring MKS.

I have wide feet, I wear chucks and the GR-9s were fine.

Not so fine:

- small surface very slippery in wet conditions.
- the big metal tabs break off easily.

my firlfriend complained that her soles hurt with some MKS road pedals, so I switched out to the GR-9s and she's loving them. Personally, I can't get used to cages and still ride clipless.

gr-9's are sweet. riding in sneakers on the streets, they will do you better than almost anything else.

except the bearings suck.

zelah 10-10-06 01:28 AM

i love my sylvans, i hear they're narrow though

griffin_ 10-10-06 01:46 AM

after a few thousands miles i have NO complaints about my gr-9's
i think they look cooler than the tracks

half clips are dangerous when you ride brake-less I like the sylvans but I would also rock the gr-9s on one of my bikes

shants 10-10-06 04:54 AM

the gr-9s are the tits in the mouth.

TheRobbStory 10-10-06 06:56 AM

I put GR-9's on my first fixie because Ben's Bike had a sale. I loved 'em. They felt fine in chucks and onitsukas. Anything wider, though, and I had trouble getting into them. I now ride clipless and couldn't be happier. I feel much more in control.

All the under $50 mks pedals come with the bearings pretty tight. They're fine after like 200 miles, they're really good bearing systems, they just ship them way tight and they wear in.

Retem 10-10-06 01:35 PM

not to mention you can order a rebuild kit for the pedals for cheap I have a friend who has had the same mks pedals for 20yrs

ApolloCVermouth 10-10-06 03:17 PM

Sounds like GR-9s are the way to go. I'd like to try the DIY double clip too. Thanks.

trons 10-10-06 05:00 PM

you can also adjust them mwhen you get them

gr-9 = bearings suck, slippery when wet, tabs break
