Chainline advice.....
 

I've recently built up my track bike & I'm having some chainline issues. The rear spacing is 120mm & I'm using a flip flop hub with comprable spacing. Its an older italian frame so the BB I found is a shimano with a 107 spindle length & i'm using Sugino RD cranks/ring which can be put on a 103-107 BB. I can see that the chainring is farther out then the cog is & I can hear the effect. I'm wondering if I need to get myself a 103 BB, which is hard to find in a 70mm Italian Thread ( I think phil wood does but ..pricey). The other option would be to move the chain ring inside, I'd rather not but I'm not sure if there are other options or if that would be a very good idea. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. which side of the crank do you have the ring mounted on?

what is your measured chainline front and rear.

moving the chainring to the inside will move your chainline in by ~5mm

I don't have a metric ruler around but using a standard ruler and converting it looks like the front is ~46.5mm & the rear is about 54mm. The chainring is mounted on the outside of the crank.

Oops too true the conversions arent working, i'll get a real ruler tomorrow. Basically I could tell that the chainring was a farther out then the cog, not by a huge amount but visible. I moved the ring inside and now its reversed, i can see a the chain going wider toward the cog. Its not a big difference but its noisy as hell. Is a 3 mm difference a big problem?

People ride with worse than 3mm.

As long as the difference is less than 5mm, you'll be alright. It might not be perfectly silent, but its not a problem. You should be about 2mm off now, so i wouldn't sweat it.

Thats cool. If any one has suggestions on cutting down the noise let me know. I was looking through the posts and someone mentioned that running a 1/8 chain on the 3/32 components was ok, and ran quiet. The other thing is that it was quieter when the chain was new (Its a month old now), I get a little grit on my fingers when i run my finger down the chain. Should I just clean the chain in some gasoline or something? Thanks again though to all.
