so i bought this 3spd beater (real tuff steel) raleigh roadie, from this guy , so i could do meesenger work on a solid bike. after 2 days the rear cog failed and would spin without the hub.

so i would pedal and the force would spin the cog, not the wheel. weird as ****.right?

i bring it back to him, he switches it up for a another 3spd, and we decide to get a new hub/rim and make it fixed.


so he did. my first fixie. road the **** out of it for one day (yesterday) , and just when i was getting the hang of a coast less rearbrakeless existens, as i put the first hard force against a downhill momentum, and it faied. the rear cog was unfixed from the hub. only a little at first. i was able to ride home. but it would pregressively slip worse and worse. the bike is unridable now.

i dont feel as this is a regular thing with conversions converted proper. any ideas what was installed less than adequately? or what part i might be missing?

you stripped your hub due to poor installation.

or it's not a true track hub... it's probably just a road hub without the threading for a reverse threaded lockring. in that case, use your brake to slow down as you ride to the shop to shove that wheel up your pal's arse.

cheap even for a suicide hub job. Order a suzue track hub. They're cheap, but they will at least stay together better than what you have.

iis it possible to repair the damaged hub?
would i need a new hub and relace the same wheel?

what would make more sense, since at this point im almost pissed and i have to fix the bike

any ideas what particular aspect of the build was made incorrectly since it happened exactly the same on the 3spd hub?

Buy a new true track wheelset and you shouldn't have this problem.. Don't buy from that guy again either, get your money back or get him to sell you a wheel for the difference.. haha.. I don't know, that's pretty rare that it happened twice in a row, it must be a real ****ty job that guy is doing.

Your description is not accurate enough.

-No idea what happened to the 3spd. (That means a hub gear, right? Don't know about those.)

-The fixed hub most likely is a "suicide hub", ie a threaded freewheel hub with a track cog spun on. The cog prolly just unthreaded from it. No damage done if you're lucky, you just have to tighten it down super hard. Do inspect the threads and see if they're damaged. You can run a suicide, but a track hub is preferable, of course.

i dont want to bother with the guy over this bike , i got the whole thing for 60$ and he replaced everything (that failed) for free.

taking it to someone with a clue seems like the way out.

or just ordering a wheelset. i have a 16 tooth track cog. any recomendations for the finest/cheapest rear trak wheel/hub??

the 3 speed wheel is probably a totally different issue. if you're pedaling forward and the 3 speed wheel just spins without engaging, you either need to adjust the shift cable, or the pawls are worn out and the hub needs replaced.

chucksbikes.com is selling a formula hub/mavic cxp22 track wheelset for 165, which is a good deal.

... which broke twice already. Disposable wheels are cheap in the short run, I guess.

if you want the cheapest reliable solution put on a single speed freewheel and be done with it.

If you want a reliable fixed gear, spend the money for a good rear wheel. If you plan to ride this bike for hours every day (which I assume most meesengers do) it doesn't pay to cheap out too much. You don't need top of the line necessarily, but you do need to spend a few bucks to get good reliable stuff. Broken bike=lost time=lost income. No?

The "meesengers" part got me giggling aloud at work. Like a goose and a messenger put together. Glad someone caught that. :D

yea, i need a track hub. i was reluctant to do that since the bike is a rusted beater. there arent to many bike shops around here with track parts in so its hard to find a decent mechanic to work on the conversion since fixed is not the new bubble gum in miami ....not yet i guess.

theres one spot way out north im going to check out. maybe i can find a decent used track hub.

i just got my other bike stolen so i cant even go cooorier tomorrow. how sad.
