Green Festival (DC)-did anyone else go?/green options for bikes?
I had a great time at the DC Greenfestival this weekend. I love all the new technology, all the sustainable options. Especially to the extent that we now have options within the green market. Ie. I don't want to support Dov from American Apparel. He has used green politics to gain license to be a sleazebag. But now there are tons of other options out there. No Sweat for instance, is older than AA and much cooler. Oh, and they make shoes.
I loved all the options out there for sustainable living, anyone else have fun? Anyone have any ideas for uniting all the folks that biked to the festival. What about greener bike options? I know paints are really polluting, Chrome is unbelieveably worse. Grant petersen has spoken about using vegetable oil for chain lube. odd, but it does work as a light oil. Any part that lasts a long time and does not require replacement would make a difference. |
Calfee makes a bamboo bike. Expensive but very cool. Also powder coating is far less toxic than paint and no overspray.

Ernesto of hbfk.com sells soy-based bike lube.

RedDeMartini I wish you posted this a week or even 2 weeks ago so I could have attended. I had no idea

I bought some soy based lube at my local food coop that is pretty good stuff. Similar to WD-40. It might be a bit light for chain lube, but great for cables and such. The company that makes it also makes soy based grease, as well as a lot of other cleaning and sealing products.

Not really but at least the material is sustainable (the bamboo of course).

you can however find similar sprays that leave a protective coating; basically what those two in one cleaner-lubes are.

ProLink is amazing stuff. Best lube i have used and says it is enviornmentally friendly on the bottle. Keeps chains clean AND lubed. Rarely do I have a loud chain this stuff wont shut up.
|
Also, most of the Pedro's lubes, degreasers, and all that stuff is environmentally friendly.

Ive heard horror stories of people using veggie oil or animal fat on their chain and then taking it to an LBS. The yummy lube had attracted some unwanted guests, and upon removing the bottom bracket a few dozen baby cockroaches tumbled out.
