[QUOTE=shot]That's crazy, especially because Mini Cooper's dont have a frame around the door window glass. The glass is just sticking up out of the door. So if the window was "up", you must have flown over a panel of glass, but you could have broken it right off......you know??

you know, he was riding all sexy in that thing - top down, windows open. ladies love coop guy.

the best part was when i got up off the street and he started pointing to some microscopic flaw in his door, telling me i was going to have to pay for his thousands in damages. or maybe it was the other best part, after the whole incident when his wife called and left a message saying that geico disagreed with the mont. co. police about the accident and that i should cooperate fully with their investigation. (the investigation, of course, mainly involved handing me a check.)

that was a pretty interesting day, actually, because an hour before that i was on the cap crescent trail and some psych patient had escaped sibley hospital and jumped into a ravine, and we had to pull some good samaritanly acls action. anyway, i digress.

i also avoid riding in that non-lane next to parked cars now if i can help it. lesson learned.

piwonka 10-21-06 11:12 AM

yeah i watch out for car doors for sure, i'll take the whole lane and let the cars focus on my ass if i think there is a possibility of getting doored:) .
i was in the 5pm downtown traffic the other day leaving work, and traffic was all backed up and jerks were stopped in the crosswalk and **** of course...i'm at a light trying to cross and i haven't had the chance to get onto the actual road...i cross behind a big van at the crosswalk and a ped had just walked past me going the other way so i think it's cool...i nudge my wheel out just a bit and all of a sudden a MF'in cadillac slams on his brakes, almost hits me, his tires are screeching (ABS of course) which means he was probably going like 30. i mashed my front brake and endo'd up some, put my foot down, looked at the muther****er and said slow the **** down then rode off....i was pissed...the time between that guy walking across the street and my sticking my wheel out was about a half a second, ****ing serious

last night i had my first spill, :D , i was thinking reading all these mishaps that i wouldn't crash just riding around neighborhoods and ****...that was probably my demise right there.
me and two others were cruising from a pub back to my place because i had forgotten my wallet (i know, WTF). it was a bit chilly and i walked out my door in shorts, rode a block and realized that it was pretty cold so i went back to put pants on...forgot my wallet...that's ok my bro bought me a few brews there. we were making the trip back to my place to get my wallet and head to another place to meet some people....riding through unfamiliar neighborhood streets. we are headed down a street that is flat to just a bit downhill so our cadence is up real good. that means we're going about 18-20MPH probably, i started coming up on his back wheel and i'm thnking i should slow down a bit and get some more room...just as that happens he finds the street we want...he does a short skid stop to scrub some speed and my front wheel goes right into his back wheel....it sucked...i saw him skid and i'm thinking OH ****!! i didn't even think to pull my brake, it all happened too fast, his back wheel clipped my front wheel as he turned (of course my wheel was on the inside of the turn) i kicked my bike away and caught my self on my hands first then fell to my left side and rotated over to my back. i got a nasty strawberry on my ankle bone (short socks on but jeans still allowed it), i got a nasty hipper (bruise on my hip from smacking the ground) another not too bad strawberry on my left arm close to my elbow and then a good strawberry on my shoulder...yeah my whole left side got messed up. i had black pavement coloring all over the back of my shirt and my arm, lol. i slid on my timbuk2 once i rotated over to my back...the other one riding with us said it was crazy looking. she said i slid like i was on ice, i put my hands up and my feet too once i rotated over...the bag barely has a scratch on it...some scrapes on the plastic clips is all.
my bike is all good, a little scratch on my brooks and a little on my bartape...nothing got bent at all, both wheels still true...not too bad of a crash really, it's about the same as a hard slam skating in a bowl or at the skatepark...didn't hit my head either but my neck is sore from my muscles flexing i guess to keep my head off the ground...i smoked 'em on the hills after that back to my place though, i was a bit mad. i had to stop and wait a few minutes for them to catch up once we were getting back into my neighborhood...then we went to drink more.
i think the road bike was trying to pop off to different gears on the hills...lol, and she makes fun of us having fixed gears...

cc700 02-21-07 12:05 PM

well i just tried to skid and use the front brake to upset the weight a bit...

problem is i was already leaning forward and i didn't let off of the brake. pretty gnarly headfirst turnover. i'm bleeding:D

joshuastar 02-21-07 12:14 PM

about three weeks ago, i was screwing around with my left backpack strap, trying to put it back on when i hopped down a curb, hit a piece of broken concrete and flipped over my bars, turned sideways and landed on my left elbow and left knee.

the onlookers were impressed.

"are you okay??" they asked.
"yeaaaahhh..." i said.
"that really make our day!!" they told me.
"i'm just going to lay here for a few minutes..." i replied.

"...do you want some advil?" they offered.

three weeks later, and i'm good as new!

mostly.

Ahh we all wreck at some point. My last one was pretty crazy as I was crossing some tracks and thought I had a good angle. It was at night and with a light on. My rear wheel caught hard and I went down very hard. I later noticed as I was riding that my rear tire was flat. Must have had a slow leak and that is what I blame the wreck on, being I had low air in the rear. I certainly couldn't have been my fault! lol I was a little messed up though. Did have gloves on and that was a hugh help being that I was on cobblestone.

I tacoed a rear wheel that way... Wasn't even fixed, just trying to go fast at night around a parking lot, drunk of course. Thought nothing was wrong till I tried to ride away

wrecking is a part of life. the question is when and how bad. hopefully you do it on your own and cars don't get involved. i had a friend who wiped out on a wet patch and a car was in just the right spot to kill his landshark frame. knock on wood for all of us.

You popped it too high man, too high. :) Seriously, front brake is unnecessary. just do a moderately quick weight shift forward, and pull up with your front foot while pushing down with your back.

I can vouch for that. I own a mini. It is weird because when one opens the door the window rolls down.

haha thanks. i'll try it again in a little while, when i have some gloves:)

might try it when it's raining just to get a feel for it.

kludge 02-21-07 01:46 PM

my favorite wipe out story. it was raining out, i was fine with going at a moderate clip and making hard turns on the wet asphalt. when it was time to bring it in and head over to the train station i went over a large patch of bricks that became really slick and slippery. i made it through the slick stuff pretty ok but when i made a hard turn the bike totally slipped from beneath me. what was so great about the whole thing is that my feet were in such a position that i managed to somehow "walk" through the accident. the bike slipped away but i ended up totally upright and walking because of the forward momentum that i had. it was wierd and great.

megatron 02-21-07 01:48 PM

Drivers are weird. It just amazes me how little attention some of them pay to cyclists. Yesterday I was riding home (along a bike route) and some guy is in the MIDDLE of the lane, in which 2 cars could easily fit through, although not many cars use the road. Anyways, guy is stopping abruptly looking down streets for a parking spot i suppose, and i keep on trying to pass but he gets up enough speed to not let me get by as he goes to the next alley or street looking for somewhere to park. So i just cranked hard and left him behind me eventually.

benoist 02-21-07 01:48 PM

Vespoli, who are you? I'm a student at Tech too-- thats a pretty ****ty intersection. You should come by the cooperative tonight (we could probably get you some new bars).

Nevermind, I just realized how old this thread is.

newnoise 02-21-07 03:44 PM

last time i fell (about a week ago), i felt like a huge dork.

I was dicking around in a parking lot one night doing skids and what not(dork). I was able to get 180s down consistantly at moderate speed, so i tried a really fast one. Basically I just leaned too far forward when I started the skid and my back wheel came up. I went down and somehow all of my weight landed on the backside of my left hand still gripping the bars. Now I have three scabs on the back of my hand perfectly following my knuckle bones. I feel like wolverine (minus the big adamantium claws). I want to get some gloves now.

mander 02-21-07 03:55 PM

I ate **** yesterday doing a no handed trackstand in a school hallway with a completely flat rear tire. luckily there were no witnesses. :)

jonnywill 02-21-07 04:13 PM

similar to my first crash, but mine left me with a cracked up ribcage and hip, nasty roadrash, and a case of shock that almost left me unconcious in fazoli's (i got back up and finished my ride, completely out of it, the adrenaline and everything completely exhausted my energy supply...once inside i started seeing stars and spots and colors...fortunately i was able to choke down my breadstick and drink some water, pulled me out of it pretty quick.) i rode home after fazolis and didn't even realize my bike was banged up so bad...all i thought had happened was some scraping on my brooks saddle. it was much worse than that, the bike wasn't really rideable, i just forced it to go.

i won't take a turn at that speed ever again.

mander 02-21-07 04:23 PM

Pursuant to jonnywill's post, it's a really good idea to be careful with shock. After falling hard I bet you can lose about 20 iq points getting into a daze; coupled with a damaged bike this puts you at pretty good risk of eating ca-ca again. Last fall I went down HARD twice in a row over the bars and onto my shoulder, separating it the first time and then separating it rather severely the second. Had i sat down for ten minutes after the first fall, really gone over my bike and collected myself this wouldn't have happened.

Then again it was pretty funny. :)

Cromulent 02-21-07 04:27 PM

My favorite stupid crash of mine was a couple of months ago. I was on the bike trail near the Art Museum approaching these two guys who were taking up the entire trail. No problem, thought I, I'll simply go around them on the grass. So I did. The grass was really muddy. It was dark. And I look up to see this tree branch coming at my eye. So I swerve. And to correct myself, I swerve again. Whee. And then I slip. Then I fall off and land in the mud.

The two guys did stop to ask if I was okay. Sort of. They were laughing pretty hard.

happened to me about a year and a half ago. My left side, right about the hip, was swollen for about a month and a half. Still have some scars from the road rash.

+my IQ minus 20 points (so like, 380).

After I got into a scuffle with a Ford Taurus because of a Mini Cooper (sorry to folks who own them, but I now have an irrational bias against them) I got up and tried to run after the Mini who caused my crash and totally ate **** again trying to run in mountain shoes.

EDIT: It serves me right that on a post in which I claim to have an IQ of 400 I **** up. I meant to quote mander.

The same identical thing (except didn't happent at a trainstation) happened to me. I did think that I'm going to fall for sure this time, though.

But, I did wash/wipe out once, going too fast into a left turn, on gravel. I shaved off some flesh off my right hand's knuckles (permanent craterish thing remains) and cracked a rib. Laughing was painful for 5 weeks.
