^^^That story by progre-ss is especially humorous when you add in the silly visuals of "Extreme Powerwalking".

I'm surprised Stiller & Co. haven't capitalized on this already.

I was so stunned I didn't realize she had put 20-30 feet of distance between us. Oh no she didn't. I put it into high gear and passed her, looking back as I passed just to make sure she saw the smile on my face. Did she ever cuz the look in her eyes said "GAME ON FILIPINO BOY!" She upped the ante and passed me with no regard to the other shoppers in the mall, knocking people over left and right. People were ducking behind kiosks, benches and potted trees to avoid granny's wrath. This went on for about a lap and a half around the mall. I was ahead by a good 10 feet as we approached a right hand turn at the 3-way intersection of The Gap,Nordstrom's and Baby Gap. As she passed me she didn't see the huge double stroller crossing the intersection with it's screaming passengers. It sounded like they were telling her to watch out but since my kids aren't babies anymore, I've lost the ability to understand baby talk. Needless to say, she didn't see or hear them and ran straight into the left side of the stroller. Baby bottles, diapers and a hearing aid or two were flung high into the air. Witnesses gasped with fright and the mall stood silently still as what was happening before them appeared to be going on in slow motion. I passed grandma just as she landed over the now tipped over stroller, lucky to have escaped the carnage and becoming a victim myself. I glanced over my shoulder to see if she was okay only to see her giving me the finger and a knowing "I'll get you next time sonny!" look. Be careful out there. I've learned my lesson. What may seem like a quick passing by, may turn into the race of your life!

:roflmao:

oh man...i'd stay off my bike for a whole day just to see that all go down!

sfcrossrider 10-26-06 01:33 PM

I could care less if someone passes me. It's the dorks that treat evey pass as a race that make me laugh. RIGHT ON MAN!!! YOU PASSED ME ON A BIKE PATH WHILE I WAS ON MY 30 YEAR OLD BEACH BIKE. FU(KEN *****EN!!!

How'd she know you're Filipino? Were you wearing flip flops, jeans and a t-shirt and smell like bagoong?

AGGRO 10-26-06 02:30 PM

Funny thread. You should see the kooks "racing" around Mirimar lake on the weekends. Fargin Hill-ar-ious :D

Weeks ago I reeled in 2 roadies just kickin it and said "hi guys" and waved when I went by. I always ride my trainer all out as it's the only time I get too. Anyway, after about 3 lights they catch me but won't come up to the line and won't talk to me. WHATEVER

Now it turns into hills which aren't what the old tribike is best at and I see one guy leave his struggling buddy to give chase. Great, he waits to get into the hills? Well I am spent by now and say "nice climb" as he pulls up. He is silent....:D What a dork LOL Had I known he thought it was a race I woulda drank a few less beers the night before (wink) or saved some gas on the flats.

I wanted to say, good thing there where some red lights eh? :) but next time out I run into em I know it's game on LOL

kyle! 10-26-06 02:36 PM

off subject but still kinda on, i hate giving a friendly hello or nod and getting only a stare as a reply. understandible if they're really into their ride, but when they just stare. ugh.

but yeah, when i go up the 101 or something there's alway those old guys on bikes that are more expensive than my life and i pass them and it kinda makes me go "heh" inside, but i could care less about competition.

masterlink 10-26-06 02:41 PM

I'm usually a nice mellow guy, but I won't lie, I'll straight up slice a mofo for passing me on the bike path!

bonechilling 10-26-06 05:09 PM

Man, all of these stories.. they all happened to me
during the two days of the MS150. We were not the
hardest bunch of guys, but we had every kook and
clown in the Midwest trying to pass our pack (of nine),
or else old guys on hybrids riding in groups five-wide.

jyossarian 10-26-06 05:14 PM

mmmm....spam, eggs and rice...w/ patis...i'm hungry now.

Wait! Don't get glass on the floor!

My dog gets pumped up. Something runs he chases. I chase him he runs. :D Then he stays pumped up for quite a while.

I get pumped up too. But I will not draft or pull someone who is not experienced, it's dangerous and asking for an accident. It's really dumb to go fast on a bike path too. Lots of riders lose good judgment as they start to get overtired, or as the endorphins kick in and they are just lousy riders. But mostly people ride as dumb as they drive. It's the same in the car, tailgaters everywhere and trying to pass for no reason etc.

A lot of us are addicted to the endorphins we get from riding. Seems like no one knows.

dude was drafting you. what's the big deal?

DerekRI 10-26-06 09:24 PM

Whenever me and my friends ride the bike path, we just keep a fun moderate pace.. until the last 50 feet when I sprint to the coffee shop, with my arms raised, yelling "I WON, I WON!"

Irritates them more and more each time...

common courtesy says that i don't draft on someone i don't know and i don't want someone drafting me that i don't know. as many folks have already pointed out, this is dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. also, it's about personal space. when i ride with friends, we usually give each other at least a foot of space. none of us are trying to ride in a pace line or anything. honestly, i wouldn't have minded this guy being about 10 feet back or maybe a bit closer, but i'm not exaggerating (sp?) when i say he was INCHES off my back wheel. he coulda even asked me if he could draft off me and i wouldn't have minded that much, but dude didn't even say anything when i initiated conversation. something tells me that someone who would draft off another person that closely that they didn't know and someone who would ride like that on a bike path doesn't know what they hell they're doing....plus being anti-social. i'm glad i waved him past and i stayed about 20 feet back. that's just me.

The guy on the Pista? Was R600 Dura-Ace.

I ride South-North on the path parallel to Foothills up to the airport/jail/emissions office park mostly with some riding to the farmer's market on weekends.

The whole racing on the bike path thing really only bothers me when there are kids and moms with strollers on the path. Pretty dangerous to be zooming in and out of crowds of children and their parents. Getting passed isn't a big deal - in a town full of uber-cyclists that's the norm - but making a share used path a racetrack is just amateur hour. Getting to work fast, that's just commuting.

There is a racewalking episode of Malcolm in the Middle, where Hal gets into it and has an archrival in the neighborhood. Soon enough they both have the full body spandex outfit and aerodynamic time-trial helmet...it was pretty funny seeing them race around the paths in the park.

Clausen, race walking featured on FOX sitcom

The sport of race walking – and several U.S. race walkers – made
their prime-time sit-com debuts Sunday night in FOX's broadcast of
its hit series, "Malcolm in the Middle."

Thanks to the assistance of technical advisor Curt Clausen, Team
USA's 1999 World Championships bronze medalist in the 50-kilometer
race walk, Sunday's episode of "Malcolm" had as its main storyline
Malcolm's father, Hal, taking up the sport.

The show's writers wanted to incorporate race walking into the show
and called Clausen in the fall at the ARCO Olympic Training Center,
where he lives and trains. Clausen read the script and made
suggestions for how to incorporate information on race walking rules
and technique into the show.

"I read the script, and it was hilarious," Clausen said. "It didn't
make fun of race walking as much as it could have. I suggested some
things on the script. It was a lot of fun."

Clausen headed to Los Angeles, where he taught four key actors in the
sitcom how to race walk, and he appeared in the several scenes.
Teaching the actors to race walk in a manner befitting a sitcom
proved an integral part of the process.

"The director said it had to look funnier, so we exaggerated the
motions a little more," Clausen said. "It actually looked pretty good
on film."

The episode chronicled the race walking obsession of Hal (Bryan
Cranston) after he sees a group of walkers – including Clausen and
fellow Team USA athletes Susan Armenta, Philip Dunn and Sean Albert –
striding through a park. So inspired does Hal become that he immerses
himself in walking, studying tapes to perfect his technique and
speed. He even dreams one night of being a secret weapon for the Army
during World War I, race-walking important documents across enemy
lines.

Hal is foiled in his attempt to overtake the fastest walker in the
group, a man clad in a full-body blue spandex suit and aerodynamic
helmet, until he realizes by studying a videotape that his nemesis
has both feet off the ground – the deadliest of sins in race walking.
Haranguing the man with the insult of "Jogger!!" while wearing his
own red-flamed bodysuit and helmet, Hal keeps pace with him until, in
a moment vaguely reminiscent of Sergei Eisenstein's 1925 classic
film "Battleship Potemkin," the two men barrel toward a baby carriage
and fall to the ground rather than injure the baby.

"Malcolm in the Middle" is part of FOX's highly rated Sunday night
comedy lineup that includes "The Simpsons" and "King of the Hill".

Nah...there's no excuse. Most people are a$$holes.

My wife passed some kook on a Pista (riding up Judah) while riding her POS to the store yesterday. This tool almost had a heart attack trying to catch her. Just because a woman on an old POS MTB pass you doesn't mean you're slow... it just means that she is a fu(k of alot faster.
