There Should Be.....

A separate singlespeed forum and a separate fixie forum. They are two totally different bike sub-cultures.

baxtefer 10-30-06 09:53 PM

there are no SS-ers in here
just hipsters

dirtyphotons 10-30-06 09:54 PM

for real. plus, i'm sick of sharing a forum with right handed fixed gear cyclists. i just dont feel like i can identify with people who arent exactly like me...

Morgie 10-30-06 09:55 PM

this comes up from time to time... but it's really uncalled for...

Heres one. But I only ride dirt so I most likely don't count.

Can we also split the ebay/craigslist sticky while we're at it? It's just too confusing having items for sale on two different websites in one thread.

auk 10-30-06 10:50 PM

There is, oh wait, you're already in it.

Different steads for different needs. Same thread binds though.

pitboss 10-30-06 11:58 PM

Auk - guess what I did? Haha...

EastBiker 10-31-06 05:12 AM

Surely the differences between fixies and SS warrant separate forums. One is borne out of track/road heritage while the other has off trail roots. They are as different as night and day.

What kind of a forum is this if most of you have to resort to ridiculing to dispute the proposal. Please provide some valid arguments.

Momentum 10-31-06 05:17 AM

They have (or had) a smilar ethos of self reliance and building bikes from bits and pieces of old bikes. They both go against more mainstream cycling culture by choosing simplicity over complexity.

Plus there are people who ride fixed offroad and ss on road so the theory that they come from different cultures doesn't work.

Good point, thanks. But I disagree about them not coming from different cultures - they are worlds apart. I'm not sure though if there are people who ride fixed offroad - if there are, they must be really skilled to ride on a gnarly singletrack.

Wow, this one is worth coming out of retirement for. You need to bone up on your cycling history. Fixed gears were around before the track existed and the "road" heritage they came out of was way closer to MTB than it is to modern day road cycling.

And to address your other thread, there are more than a few of us riding fixed gears bikes on technical trails.

Here I thought they were just drivetrains for bicycles. Turns out they are sub-cultures? Maybe building that conversion was a bad idea...

Blender 10-31-06 07:25 AM

This was extremly confusing beore I finally caught on.
It seems that SS stands for Single speed and FG stands for Fixed Gear.
knowing this I think it can remain a single forum.
It's even better when Posters (or OP's) actually spell out Single Speed anf Fixed Gear.

Hey, thanks for the link, that was very interesting. That sure brings technocal riding on a whole new level, at least for me. I would imagine that the skill involved is very impressive.

As for the others who replied just to ridicule, thanks for replying anyway.

EastBiker

Unfortunately, if you don't ride a fixed gear, or ask a basic question because you are new, or maybe they have posted here 2 months before you (old skool, yo!) did - well then, get ready to suffer their off-topic threads and belitting input. It is pretty saddening that making fun of people getting into bikes is a ****ing hobby around here. Or should I say was a hobby. I personally would love to see all these folks grab the next train to trendsville.

Good luck whichever path you take! Occasionally, the idiots go to sleep and the real conversations happen. A lot of times the valuable info is buried under countless, worthless threads. You can also check out the "Rides and Races" subforum for local events and the like. There is also a Regional Sub-forum on the BikeForums landing page.

Awesome.:)

This shall be our manifesto.

Thanks, [165].

Are you saying this because you ride fixed and you think SS riders aren't cool enough to share a forum with, or because you ride SS and you don't like the FG "sub-culture"? Either way, I think SS and FG are similar enough to stay in the same forum. This is a BIKE forum not at sub-culture forum.

no one is preventing you from starting one

I am sure you can get it filled in no time.

Morgie 10-31-06 12:08 PM

this whole thing gets to me... people always saying FG and SS are vastly different, in the way they ride you're right. But that doesn't change the fact that my bike changes from FG to SS in minutes without adding/or removing any parts, simply by fliping the rear wheel... this means that the SAME bike if both a FG and SS bike, therefore I'm ok with ONE Forum... if you really wanna talk about differences I'd say fixed/ss moutain vs. fg/ss road is a bigger deal... I've ridden SS in Alley Cats and in rides aroud down with other fixed gear riders so the "culture" thing I don't think is a big deal, and when the average person sees me riding with a bunch of FG riders I look similiar to any of the other guys on FGs in their minds....

Shiznaz 10-31-06 12:33 PM

There should be... A bowl of hard candy at every lamp post, for the nice people!

LóFarkas 10-31-06 12:42 PM

+1!!! And a butler to carry my backpack. Livery optional.
