FMF cranks
 

in my searching through teh interw3bz I came across FMF's bmx website and found these:

they're $29, cold forged 6061 T6 aluminum, and they come in either square taper or isis drive (for all those new off the hook bikes with the truvativ cranksets). they've got other crank sets, one set that looks like a rip off of the answer alumilites, same price as them as well, $150.

I might score a set for the next bike I build, and thought some of you might appreciate some decent cranks for a decent price. enjoy.

They are always at that price. They are presumably at the same level as dotek/bulletproof cranks, in my book. However, the cheap-o FMF cranks also come in the ISIS variety, so I am running some on my SS MTB right now. No real complaints.

I'm liking them at the moment purely on their looks, because as opposed to the doteks and bulletproofs, they're not wide as hell. the isis option is quite nice.

I'd probably get some if they came in silver.

FMF is distro'd through J&B, and I got some of their freewheels back at my old job for kids bmx bikes. those things were disgusting, with rattly bearings with absolutely no grease. I opened one up to look at the innards, and found half-sphere bearings, jagged chuncks of metal, no grease, and other general horrors. I don't know anything about those cranks, but I don't trust FMF.

Any shop should be able to get these for you for around the $29 the OP mentioned.

Doesn't this pic look like every arm of the spider is a different length? The angles also look off to me. Holes not in the middle, either... Weird.

They are certainly not the prettiest things in the world. Also: They come in a ridiculous array of lengths (just like the bulletproof and doteks), from 155 to 185.

Does anyone know if the FMF logo and the crank arm is just a sticker or what?

It is. It's easily removed but is set down in an indentation so it looks a bit odd with nothing there. I've been running a 175mm set with a Surly chain ring on my SS MTB without any issues. The pedal threads have definitely held up better than the Bulletproof cranks on my fixed.

...a good way to try out 165's.

I'm running the $150 versions. They're ridiculously stiff, and look pretty cool. The chainline was a bit of an issue, but that's all about ISIS, and I eventually figured it out.

what was your isis issue?

thats nuts about the freewheels, how long ago was that, was their customer service of any help, were they called?

My chainline took some fussing to get right. From what I understand, ISIS is only available in a few lengths and isn't adjustable. Dunno if this matters either, but I bought my wheels pre-built from IRO, so maybe that limited what we could do to move the rear cog around.

Eventually, the shop flipped the spider around and did a few other things that got the chainline within a mm or two - not perfect, but good enough.
