Race SS or fixed?

Just curious, how many of you race alleycats singlespeed and how many of you race them fixed?
I talked to a friend that told me she raced singlespeed in heavy-traffic'd alley cats but rides fixed in lesser traffic-intense races. Never heard of this, wondered if it was common?

It's definetely a smart thing to do if you are going FTW and concerned about every ounce of speed, most people, including myself are too lazy and don't care enough to switch.

For the most part, the only people I ever see using singlespeed freewheels on fixed-type bikes are messengers who are probably just trying to save energy or save their knees. It seems like alleycats here are usually won by people on road bikes. Gears make you go faster.

In the alleycats here we limit it to ss and fg only. We used to have a winner for each type, but when the fixed riders kept winning anyway, then we just stopped caring about the ss.

Our alley cats are wide open. We get fixed, road, mountain, cross, thrift store 3 speeds, cruisers, and any other kind of bike you can think of. The top guy* is always fixed. I can't stand the SS/FG only idea for alleycats, it alienates a lot of people, and limits the competition.

*The same person has won just about all of the recent alleycats.

Cause we got lots of speed demons on track bikes, geared is the way to win.

My alleycat bike is a Bontrager road bike with vintage campy Record. The idea that an alleycat bike needs to be fixed is weeetarted.

Gears make you look fat, too.

Oh em gee, does this triple make my ass look big?

Also, I think limiting alleycats to SS or FG is pretty wee todd edd as well. Ride what the **** you want as long as you ride.

I thought the idea of an alleycat was to make you look like a messenger
