i hate myself for startaing a deep v thread...

but i'm a little mixed up on something. my lbs has non-machined black rims--but they're textured, like the cover of old fender guitar amps. what the hell? can't find anything on google...

freeskihp 12-10-06 04:39 PM

anodizized black

mcatano 12-10-06 04:42 PM

Hammerite finish maybe? I think I've seen pictures of those before.

humancongereel 12-10-06 04:43 PM

hmmm...totally not digging the crackly look. but they're all the lbs has. is my lbs weird, or is velocity just making those? the only flat black ones i find are machined.

not much info to add here but . . .
I've heard of (never seen) carbon fiber dimpled road rims. Clearly, they're machined, but maybe the same idea applies? What would it do for aerodynamics?

matte anodizing is textured

baxtefer 12-10-06 04:51 PM

yup i've seen the hammertone (or whatever it's called) finish too.
there's pics on here somewhere

nah...i don't think it's the same. i've seen those dimpled rims and they look nothing like these. i mean, yeah, it's possible that the idea is to make up for not being machined by roughing it up, but the whole idea of non-machined rims is to have no brakes or disc brakes, so a braking surface--no matter how it gets on there--seems a waste of manufaturing time.

i don't think it'd affect aerodynamics much...probably like the difference between shaving or not.

You mean I've been shaving this entire time for nothing?!

Kidding!! totally kidding....

operator 12-10-06 04:56 PM

powdercoated?

humancongereel 12-10-06 04:57 PM

heh. in the summer i shave. this time of year, none of my leg skin shows anyway (thermals under my pants), so whatever.

but i'm hirsute enough that it does make a bit of difference if i shave. believe it or not. not much, but i feel it. it could also be an illusion caused by being lighter.

Loooty 12-10-06 05:21 PM

Which shop is this?

Did you try asking them about the rims?

humancongereel 12-10-06 05:22 PM

veloshop. no, i didn't ask. since there no other black non-machined rims, my first impulse was to assume velocity had changed something.

baxtefer 12-10-06 05:24 PM

humancongereel 12-10-06 05:33 PM

okay, cool. i'm not digging on it too much myself, but i like having the full story now.

bikeage 12-10-06 08:08 PM

my shop had a pair of those for a while, but someone bought em.
i wonder who...

dudeman 12-10-06 10:44 PM

do you know if veloshop ships?
