I thought part of the original idea of twisted spoke wheels is that they make the wheel stiffer, much like the old idea of soldering or tieing-off at the crosses. It stands to reason that a spoke that is half as long is stiffer, and twisting (in theory) effectively shortens the spoke by reinforcing it at the twist.

I agree that in practice, the twists are aesthetic in nature and if you truly wanted a stiffer wheel, you would solder or tie-off at the crosses.

I love the double twists as shown on the cross wheel with the green Michy tires.

Also, I have found from experience that if you want to do a full twist (the spoke still goes to the hole it was intended), as opposed to a half twist, on a 3X wheel you should add approx. 3-4mm to your spoke length. Single full twist wheels are not hard to build (provided you know how to built a standard wheel), just add 3-4mm and add a twist. Just make sure you really focus on the stress relieving steps and re-checking your tension for a few rides.

Any thoughts on how much weaker these would be than a normal 3 cross?
This should be a reasonably strong wheel, component wise. It has an 36h XT hub with a Mavic D521 rim.

i think, I THINK, but im not sure...i would go gay for a day for that cannondale, mainly the one on the 2nd page.

The thing that bothers me about the 3L3T pattern is the extreme bending of spokes. And if you don't weave them, then it looks like you'd get some mad imbalance on the flanges. It's still pretty dope though.

It doesn't matter if you weave, twist, or whatever your spokes, the worst bend they will ever get is the one the factory puts in them. There's not a lot of data out there on which variations of 3L3T work best, not enough wheels out there I guess.

the ebay wheels in post #9 were supposedly beta versions of these. the nipples-in-the-middle design makes a lot of sense...rotational momentum and all. i can vouch for the fact that these wheels feel fast!

Mr. White - I have those same hubs - how did you polish them up like that?
Mine just have a dull aluminum finish, nothing shiny like those.

it has already been discussed that cronos sold the design to cane creek and that there are a few originals out there onetwentyeight had a set recently
