I'm with ya on the tuck and roll. I think laying it down might be a good option as well in some circumstances. If you're in a situation where you're heading straight into car/? and you don't want to go to the sides (because of oncoming traffic or whatever), laying it down early as possible might avoid any broken bones or major damage to the bike. And skin grows back.
Never done that on a bicycle, but did it on a scooter once going about 30mph into a suddenly stopped car and it worked like a charm. A little scrape on my elbow and scraped up the side of the scooter but that was it.
