FYI: Jamis Sputnik IS available as a frameset
So I emailed Jamis to see if they were offering their Sputnik as a frameset only. They responded:
Yes, we do offer the sputnik as a frame set and the MSRP is $525. Thanks for your interest in Jamis Bicycles. Jamis Support 151 Ludlow Avenue Northvale, New Jersey 07647 www.jamisbikes.com/contact It seems a tad steep to me, since the MSRP on the complete is $700, but then again it's pretty reasonable for a Reynolds 631 frame and an Easton EC70 fork. |
Might as well just get a Bare Knuckle if you're dropping that kind of money...
|
they rather you buy the compleat bike. it's the same thing for geared bikes. i have the sputnik however i replaced the wheels, tires, seatpost, saddle with other stuff that i already had. for $700 they should have upgraded some of the components the bike is really nice sweet ride
|
Buy the complete, sell the components and you have a 3 or 4 hundred dollar frame..
|
Seems like way to is get the complete bike for $175 more. For all the good Ritchey parts you get--and the other stuff you can sell on Ebay--much better to get the whole bike.
Except for the bars I replaced everything on it. Some things were a size issue. Re the cranks I wanted something shorter and with a little smaller chainring. Was able to sell some stuff on Ebay--other things (like the Alex wheels) will become backups. Really like the bike--nice and comfortable on a few 40 mile rides. Now if I stop trying to coast. |
That thing is covered with stickas. Do they come off?

i'd rather have a sputnik. |
the sputnik HT and ST has parallel 73's in most sizes. same as an IRO but with name-brand tubing and a carbon fork.

Sers,
While Jamis says the frameset is available it really depends on if a particular shops' Jamis rep is going to stock them. Our distributor had no intention of stocking framesets when we did our spring booking, but after getting a full email box of "WTF?!" letters from local shops they changed their story ... but only for a one-time offer that would show up w/ the spring booking bikes (no in-season ordering). When I asked about breaking down a complete bike and selling just a frameset to a customer if that's all they were interested in our rep thought that was totally fine. That's quite a bit different than some other brands that don't "appreciate" you touching anything on the bike until it's paid for and off the floor. Even if there's not much availability for lone framesets it seems like the Jamis guys still have their heads on straight. |
