Anyone in Hong Kong?
 

I've been told it's generally not safe to ride around in Hong Kong (HK Island specifically and the Central district), however I was curious if anyone owns any singlespeeds in Hong Kong? Also, what gear ratios are you running because of the crazy climbs uphill???

i wouldn't ride anywhere there. taxis, buses, and any other drivers don't stop for pedestrians there.

i went from beijing and shanghai to hong kong, and was astounded how i saw almost zero bikes in HK.

I'll be going to Hong Kong in March, and I'll definitely be on the lookout for bikes. That's a bummer that there's not many there!

it's not there's no bikes, but they're all service bikes (recycling, construction, etc).

Tons of pollution, high temperature, high humidity. They are nice bike trails in New Teritories. You may have some luck in Stanley and Aberdeen on the other side of the island but Central and HK Island in general is not overly bike friendly.

That totally sucks that HK has a slim bicycle comminity.

Does anyone know if riding a SS/fixed in Guangzhou will be the same? I'm sure there are lots of bikes there. but from what I hear it's purely utilitarian. Mixties everywhere.

I'm thinking about bringing my fixed bicycle there.

I believe I saw one folding bicycle in Central locked up, I believe it was a Montague. Whoever owns it probably just takes a cab out of Central and rides around the island. Has anyone tried bicycling at all in Central, like in the Pedestrian ways?

hk is the total opposite of bike-friendly. most major roads in hk are 6 or 8 lanes wide, with railed concrete islands in the middle and rails separating sidewalks from the road (to prevent pedestrian accidents) but it makes cycling a nightmare. i look at the hills and think they'd be fun to climb, but the constant traffic, pollution, the heat... no thanks.

but with such an incredibly efficient transit system, who needs a commuter bike? keep it for the new territories, lantau island or stanley park, but you'd be risking your life anywhere else (though getting your bike to any of these places would prove difficult in itself without your own car).
