Late Nov I got my first fixed conversion. With school and everything I wasn’t able to go for a ride until later in the evening. I’m sure everyone knows that excitement and anticipation before their first ride on a new bike. I was giddy as hell and having a great time so I road down to downtown San Diego. I cruised by all the bars and what not and started my way back. I was headed back up 6th street on my way to Balboa Park. When I cop drove the opposite way. I wear a headlamp so she could see me look at her. She drove down to the end of the light where I saw her make a u-turn. She drove up beside me and the following clash ensued. 5.0- excuse me can I ask you to pull over. Me- uh ok. What’s the problem? 5.0 – nothing I just want to see blah blah. Me – (now stopped) ok is there a problem? What did I do? 5.0 – (asks the 5 w’s from inside the car). Then says “you’re acting pretty nervous” me- yeah cause I’m being pulled over by the cops. 5.0 – gets out and shines the light in my face. Me- ooooh sorry. 5.0 – yeah you better be sorry. I’ve been an officer for 15 years and I’ve seen blah blah blah. Me- ok ok. But I don’t see a problem, what did I do?! 5.0- I told you what you did, it’s late at night and you’re acting nervous. You know I can call backup and then 8 officers will be here and then you’ll have a real problem spending a night in jail. After that I played along as she handcuffed me, emptied my pockets with rubber gloves, went through my wallet and frisked me. I thought my best line of the night was when she asked for the fifteenth time “Do you do heroine or have any hypodermic needles on you.” “No ma’am that’s not my thing. I ride bikes.” My fixed-gear debut could not have been better. That way you can take them to court and get an attorney who wants easy cash. Screw them over and screw the officer over. I havent had any problems with S.D Police since there lovely motto is shoot first ask questions later. Seriosly ....if you live in S.D you know the stories ..the guy olding a candy bar and gets shot or the guy who is 15 feet away with a stick and gets shot over 20 times..hello??!?! Our police are ignorant hot headed trigger happy inept high school drop outs who recieved there GED's later and go into law enforcement. Being a cop isnt hard..and yet we give these people all of rights and the have the law to back them up. Shouldnt we raise the bar alittle?? I mean FBI agents have to be pretty damn smart.. And city police can go to cop school run around a jungle jim, target practice and then take a test. Hmmmm???? But I digress bike on and dont be afraid of the po-key they are nothing but monkeys with guns ..just make sure to be near a open public space. Her in SD there is a citizens law that if you are going to be pulled over be it in a car or vehicle (like a bike) you can keep on driving until you find a safe and public area. They cant b*tch or moan about it either....given you shouldnt out run them just go at a steady following speed. Why you can do it. ? Back in the 80's a police officer in SD killed and ***** a young woman( I think a college girl) and they never found out unitl they found the dump site. Later the city enforced a law that allow's citizens to have a right to protect themselves by doing this. Cops hate it when we educate our selves and know alittle about the law. Why? We get to have the same power and it levels out the playing field. So educate yoursleves about your cities law's and be safe and ride on! |
If I walked up to someone with a pile of very visible weapons on my belt and demanded they stop, that would be frowned upon.
If I padded them down or searched them without consent that would be assault. Oh, and looking "nervous" is not a crime, nor does it consitute "probable cause" in complete absence of other evidence. And simple traffic violations (not having a rear light or whatever) do not constitute "probably cause" for a search...at least not around here. I know that some cops are better than others. But what's wrong is far more than a few *******s on the force. Violence, racism, repression and unthinking defense of the status quo are not simply the actions of a few bad apples, it's their job. I've had too many bad encounters to give much sympathy to the "I'm only doing my job" excuse...yes, I know it's your job to be an ******* officer, and that's EXACTLY why I'm not a big fan of yours. There are constitutions, laws, and such. And anyone who's ever had a nasty encounter with cops can tell you EXACTLY how much toilet paper they're worth...they have the guns, they're the ones the judge is going to believe, and they have the final say. They do, of course, accomplish a lot of good things as well...people who grow up in a system based around rules, authority and a complete absence of responsibility for evaluating one's own actions outside of "law" creates a lot of stupid, violent and dangerous people. I'd have a lot more sympathy, though, if they focused a little more on conflict resolution and a little less on firearms. In theory, they do, but as someone who's been on the wrong end of everything from undercover surveillance vans and "agent provocateurs" to riot squads and prison cells, I know what they fall back on every time. I don't hate cops, I just feel a hell of a lot better when they're not around. Oh, and in Canada at least...federal law prevents them from opening messenger bags without a warrent...that's mail fraud. |
the older i get,
the less nervous i am, the less problems i have with the man... seriously, now that i am growed up and am a homewoner, i am excited to see cops in my neighborhood... still bear hostilities against new jersey police though; that state just has too damn many police that have nothing to do but harass the youth. philly cops on the other hand are great. i don't know what you'd have to do (on a bike) to get one to even give you a second look. |

So, If the bike is stolen then the person riding it is ****ed and the owner gets the bike back. Seems great to me and probably deters bike theft a great deal. How is that ridiculous? |

Being in an area known for drug activity at night on a bike would be enough reasonable suspicion to warrant an officer pulling someone over to find out if anything was going on. Nothing was, so no arrest. Yes, the officer bluffed, get over it. If there were police to police the police who would police the police who police the police? And people complain about wasteful government now... |
I dont have any problems with the cops anymore. I guess the murder rate keeps them busy now.. . Back when I rode Bmx alot, I had problems. I would cut through a parkinglot to hit another street, and I would hear a cop behind me screaming "GET OUTTA HERE THERES NO RIDING HERE". My reply would be "Just leaving!" One day I was riding with two friends, and the rent a cop gave us problems. One of my friends got mad and screamed "Go s*** yourself". He called the cops on us so fast. . .but we lost them. I just gave up trying to ride bmx after that.

When I was in NOLA in May doing relief work, it was like there wasn't even a police force there.

I had some pretty bad experiences with cops last mardi-gras in NOLA. They'd randomly pull up in front of shows at the Abbey and mass-arrest everyone on the sidewalk...a few dozen people, many of whom lived and worked on the street. They were a little better in the aftermalth of the hurricane, or so I hear, but as the cops filtered back to whence they'd came the good old-fashioned NOLA cops were up to their old tricks. "The military police are the best cops New Orleans has ever had".

My buddy and I were riding last year, and were stopped at a red light, waiting to make a protected left turn. We heard an engine slowly creeping up behind us, so we assumed it was some motorist being a tool. We turned to discover it was a motorycle police officer, slowly scooting up in between us on his motorcycle. He then laughed and said "You guys aren't nearly heavy enough to trigger the light, maybe this will help". Sure enough, he triggered the light for us with the weight of his cycle, made sure we got through the intersection safely, and then took off with a wave and a smile.
I've also had a small trackstanding competition with a bicycle police officer. He won. They aren't all bad. I promise. |

See all your problems are the fact that you're getting caught. Fixies are like ninjas, we should be like shadows in the night.
Our tools are silent and deadly. We are unstoppable once unleashed. Many of our tools are homemade we leave no trace, and unless we get caught, there should be no anyone even knows we exists except for the remnants of skid marks and cheap beer cans we leave behind...or in the ninjas case-dead bodies and fear(we can do that too of course) |
Maybe if the OP did heroin he wouldn't look so nervous.
|
I can't believe anyone would stand up for the cop! Are you kidding me? I don't even know what to say about that.

To belatedly reply to the comments about bikes in Japan, I just took this picture today. Perhaps not the nicest bike, but it is a track bike. Watched the guy walk into the convenience store. And yes, I will guarantee you that the lock you see on his seatpost is the only lock he ever uses. |

speaking of not locking your bikes up.... When I lived in Copenhagen biking was huge, there were massive parking lots of bikes and it could take you forever to find yours. People locked up there with these pencil thin little locks.
But the weird thing was.. the babies... So people would go shopping pushing these absolutely MASSIVE baby carriages. Seriously these things were a traffic hazard, huge double wide ornate, massive baby carriages with tiny little babies inside. the problem was, they wouldnt fit in any of the doorways in the shopping district... So, outside every single shop would have 3 or 4 baby carriages hanging on the sidewalk outside, with the BABIES STILL IN THEM. The moms just left their babies outside on the street with nobody watching them to go in and shop. It was like this outside of every single store! Abandoned crying babies everywhere. So yeah, tokyo they dont lock up their bikes when they go in to shop, but at least they slap a good u-lock on their children. |

Spent much time with a crying baby? You'd know why they left them outside...(insert appropriate smiley emoticon) |
