Shipping it.

Any suggestions for shipping/flying a bike from Northern, VA to Pensacola, FL? Oh and I'm a broke college student so I need it to cost <75$.

Depends on how much it weighs, but if you break it down and package it nicely (really nicely) in a box, UPS can do it for around $100.

you flying with it? if so, you might be able to get the airline to do for free. At least this is what happened for me when i flew jetblue.

fedex ground... complete bike packed and shipped should be 50-60.

Free from Jetblue? hmm. I think I'm flying Continental. Maybe they'll have something on the website. I think I might go to my LBS and see what they can hook me up with.

Well.. jetblue said it was like $80...but the girl at the counter asked me if it was round trip, i said, "no". Then she winked and waived it. Doesn't hurt to ask while you are at the desk.

You know how much your bike weighs, you know about how big a box you would need, add a few lbs for packing materials, add in the locations.

what if you break it down to 2 boxes?,wheel in one the rest in the other. if they are under 50lbs and under 62 inches and you don't have a ton of luggage it .
should be free.
what is continentals luggage rules 2 or 3 pieces of luggage, and they weight and measurement rules?

jakbikesdc 01-11-07 09:01 PM

I have to take clothes back with me, so the 2 box option I don't think will work. I once heard about a solution with taking a BMX in a guitar case, but I'm not sure that would work for a track frame+wheels& components.

VA to FL isn't too far.. shipping shouldnt be a problem.

just tie balloons to the bike and wait for it to float overhead and then shoot it down. cheapest shipping ever.

If you have too much stuff to take it with you on the plane just try and take as much as you can with you on the plane there for hopfully reducing the size and weight you have to ship making it cheaper.

jakbikesdc 01-12-07 01:01 PM

Oh like taking my bars in my suitcase or putting the cranks in with me on the plane? I guess this is one time I actually wish I had a car. (to drive down to FL so I could be able to take everything back and forth).

I eventually want to go to Iceland, so travelling issues will need to be addressed again.

FedEx Gorund has consistantly been the cheapest. Just really make sure of your box dimensions. Sometimes going 1 inch bigger is the difference between $40 and $85 for shipping (bumps it into the next catagory). The size is not on a sliding scale, but rather big jumps, from Oversize, to Oversize II, to Oversize III. As long as it's under 75 pounds weight isn't nearly as big a factor as box size. You can go on the FedEx website and type in the dims and get the rate.

From VA to FL is shouldn't be more than $40 to $50 via FedEx Ground...
