opinion on this wheelset
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-TRACK-ROAD-B...em170068712820
for the price it looks like a good deal...what do you think? thanks a lot |
eh, they aren't horrible. I bought those for a friends bike I built. they are still rolling, so I guess thats a good sign. but for another 35-50 bucks you could have a way better wheelset.
|
for a bit more I like the look and reputation of Formula hubs better.
|
I totally second babychris' answer.
Pitch that cog/lockring and replace it with a higher qualiy one or you will strip your new wheels pronto. |
yeah, I forgot to add I built it as a single speed. def get rid of that cog and lockring.
|
babychris is right, go with minimum formula/iro hubs with a budget build...it's worth it to spend a few extra bucks for the wheelset....
|
dude get the formula cxp22 wheels from quality wheel house they are decent and you can get em at practically any lbs for a decent price the atvantage is you lbs will true and tension the wheels for you
|
+1 ^ i got a pair of mavic cxp22 w/ formula hubs for my gf's bike. no complaints, still true and suprisingly light-weight. they are a bit more (like $50) but i would buy them again when looking for a bargain wheelset.

It's worth it to drop the coin on a wheelset.. you'll want to upgrade these in a matter of months. Buy nice'r the first time.

Having never riddern, nor even seen these wheels, I'd say they're a wicked deal if they are indeed handbuilt. No reason to think they're not.
Yeah, IRO and Formula hubs are great, as are Mavic rims, but I'm not certain those $130-$150 wheelsets out there are handbuilt. If they are, then that's a kickass deal as well. At my LBS, here's a price breakdown for a pair of wheels (CDN Prices): IRO Hubs $150(Yikes!) Mavic CXP 22 Rims $120-150 DT Spokes x 64-72 $45-60 Labour $70 tubes $8 cheapo tires $25 Subtotal $418 - 464 Total w tax $CAD476 - 528 $528 bux for a decent handbuilt wheelset. Toss in another $25-40 bones for a cheapo cog and lockring, another $50-60 for Soma or Surly. While pricey, they are not stratospheric. Nobody's getting rich off of building wheels there. Compare this to maybe $200CAD for the vueltas, including shipping, exchange, and customs. I'll take the vueltas any day, and buy a Bridgestone with the difference (well, most of one anyway) Fact is that good bike parts have never been cheaper or easier to get. $120 for a fixed wheelset, inc tires and tubes, cog and lockring, shipped, is killer. |
I have a bad feeling about these wheels being called "handbuilt." It says that the tires and tubes are factory mounted, and the wheel box, showing that they are obviously not built by the seller of these wheels reads, "Handbuilt precision wheel technology."
I would say that these wheels are factory built. |
