Converting a Univega Super Strada to Fixed/SS.
 

The title pretty much says it all. This is an 80's era road bike that I refurbished. My son-in-law bought it new and rode it for a few years before parking it by the trash cans in his back yard to decay. Frame's in great shape, no rust, and it rides just fine as a multi-speed road bike. The drive train is all Shimano Dura Ace including the weird DynDrive pedal/crankset; I did buy the adapters from Loose Screws Bike Parts to use with current pedal threads. I'm torn with indecision about wheather to tear it down and make it a fixed gear "urban assault" bike or keep it "as-is" and an example of a vintage 80's road bike. If the bike was an older Colnago or Cinelli I wouldn't do it. But, since it's a Univega, I'm thinking that it may not be such a bad thing. I'd like your input and suggestions to make up my mind. It does sound like a high-quality older road bike. If it were me, I'd keep the dura ace components on there and ride it as is, but I have a couple fixed gear bikes and no road bikes, so..
If you were to convert it, I'd definitely leave the shifter bosses and cable stops on there so you could change it back to a road bike if you wanted.

I converted my old 80's Univega to a fixie, and it's been my primary bike for some time now, over a year I believe. I love it. I say go for it.

Jonnypockets- Awesome build. Could you give me details about your build? Wheelset, cog size, crankset make and tooth count, and other related info. The bike I restored had 27" wheels, did you convert to 700C? Thx, Thom.

I have a Shimano front hub, Suzue rear hub on 700c Sun Rims M13IIs. The cog is 16t, and I don't remember for the life of me what the chain ring is, and I am too hungover to count, sorry. The crankset is stock, which I am pretty sure is Shimano. The bars are Nitto b123's.

I had built this bike up on a different Univega frame, but got in a wreck, so found this frame at a Portland bike co-op. She was a pretty little thing before this frame. Now she's rugged.
