I stayed in the earl's court section of London. I might as well been in Australia.

Any where from Acton to Sheaperds bush to Earls Court is Australian land.:)

Just bumping this up for you while the U.K is awake. Would love to help but will be at work (weekend as well prob next week), If I have some time off will give a late message. Just buy yourself a an AtoZ and have a wonder, watch out for the police on bikes if you do anything dodgy and get drunk:). Good luck

Every bartender in London is Australian. You'll love it.

ahh, earls court isn't so bad - i've been living there for a few years now

Not in London during the week but am around next weekend if you're still looking for a guide by then

TheBrick 01-25-07 10:27 AM

Your right Earls court is fine, having lotts of Auzzies is there is just a stament of fact. I would live there if I had the money but I am stuck in *****ty zone 4 s.e london. The ride in keeps me fit thought :)

i've got a place to stay. and have spent the last six months in NY keeping away from aussie expats. i get enough of them at home in australia.

are there any weird and wonderful road rules i should be aware of? (helmets, lights, bells, brakes and keeping left, that kind of thing)

fixedpip 01-26-07 03:00 AM

If you're riding through the City of London (rather than the rest of London), it has its own police force who tend to be no fun. Would recommend lights if you're in the square mile, as they're known to pull you over and have a word.

If you ride on the canal paths, technically you're supposed to have a horn/bell and a license. But no-one has these so...

Oh and teat the large articulated buses and any heavy goods vehicle (dump trucks etc) with some respect. They're generally driven by idiots and on the narrow streets of London, they're reet dangerous. Quite a few folks get squashed by 'em.

Aside from that, try heading to the Duke of York on a friday night (any night is good, but friday is always a little crazy). London also has several critical masses (http://www.criticalmasslondon.org.uk/).

You can get free cycling maps from tube stations which are pretty decent and will help you work out where you are when you get lost. If you plan on doing a lot of cycling then buy a mini a-z from a newsagent. There aren't many weird road laws, but you'll probably find that riding is a bit different from NY (no grid system, slower traffic, narrow lanes etc). Like Pip said, make sure you don't go up the inside (left) of buses and lorries. Split the lane instead.

There should be a couple of people around next week for a drink and a ride one evenng. I'll see what I can sort out and let you know.

Go to the TFL website. There's a big city-wide map showing the main cycle routes on that site.

I ran into a lot of canadian bartenders.

fixedpip 01-28-07 05:17 AM

Oh are you going to be around until Feb 10th? Rapha are sponsering another roller race in Shoreditch on Feb 10th: messengers vs gym geeks vs bankers etc and are putting some real money behind it:

Might be the only affordable way of getting your hands on some Rapha gear.
