Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? it's the same... there is not one for road and one for track.

The difference is in the hubs. There are fixed gear hubs, freewheel hubs, double fixed hubs and free/fixed hubs.

You can lace up mostly any rim to any hub.

Do you mean to say you want to lace machined-wall Deep Vs to track hubs instead of non-machined-wall Deep Vs? Machined walls are the ones meant for with-brake usage, whereas non-machined walls aren't.

The only difference between the two types of rim is the machining - it'll fit and work just as well with either. As far as the durability of a hub, it depends on the make and model. Find out who manufactured it and the model and hit up the search function. I haven't seen many negative reviews on here, other than prices and comparisons (high-end versus low-end, obvious quality differences). High and low flange are discussed here and probably at Sheldon Brown's site (https://sheldonbrown.com), just search around. Sheldon's site turns up results for 'flange' (discussing why high flanges have been used) here, while BF turns up ...a lot of nothing, kinda.
