Sounds like fun but maybe not. 26.8 seat post in a 27.2 hole.
Will it work or do i HAVE to have a shim?

You will compress or ovalized the seat tube trying to keep the 26.8 in there tight.

Thanks for the comments. Normally id get a new post. The seat post is a Sugino Mighty NJS post so i really wanna be able to use this thing. I looked for a shim yesterday and couldnt find one. Ill look more.

yea, you'll end up hurting the frame. Unfortunately the only shim's I've seen for that combo are "cone" types with a lot of excess shim popping over the seat tube, but then again, I haven't looked super hard.

Soda can? I *think* it should work, shouldn't it? Untidy but better than pinching the frame together.

personally, i wouldn't risk messing up my frame or having an unstable seatpost interface just to have the right stylish seatpost in there.

Sell it to the poor bastard who has a nearly complete NJS setup and just needs that 26.8 post. Then buy a Kalloy and a pound of weed.

It WILL slip no matter how much you crank it and this can possibly damage the frame so do not do it.

Yes - get the right thing the first time, but if deathhare wants to keep the seatpost, a shim might work. I have seen a good number of bikes with seatpost shims (the USE Alien suspension posts required one for certainm size frames) without any ill effects.

the hard part on this request is finding a 26.8 to 27.2 shim...
biketoolsetc and loosescrews have nothing in that range and it appears to be fairly uncommon.

Thanks, yeah i checked two shops today and they said a shim that thin doesnt exist. Maybe so cause
.4mm is pretty damn thin. That would mean the walls of the shim would need to be .2mm....thinner than butter.
Maybe ill give the ole Asahi shim a try. :)

you need a shim .2mm thick (it's a circle, remember)

you can try a can.. or even buy some shim stock, but then you'd be spending money you might as well spend on the right post

whatever you do, don't overtighten the binder if your post is slipping.. that's how seatlugs get cracked all the time

i was posing my opinion that using the right seatpost is best. second best would be using a shim (which will work, but imho is less than ideal.)

the worst idea would be to clamp a 27.2 clamp onto a 26.8 post with no shim. not only does it deform your seat tube, but it puts uneven pressure on your seatpost, causing you to have to torque it down even harder to keep it from slipping. i've cracked a seatpost and stripped an internal seatpost binder bolt this way, but of course, your results may vary.

with a shim there is less contact area and unless it's cut PERFECTLY it will probably scratch your seat tube. i still believe that a cheap seatpost that fits would be superior to a nice post with a shim. but a shim is better than a ****ed up frame. that's all i was saying.

nitto makes handlebar shims for putting 25.4 bars in a 26.0 stem. super thin, i think you might be able to find it.

of course, for the amount of money you payed for the frame, i would also find a proper seat post for it. trade or sell yours and buy a new seat post in the right size, njs approved if you MUST have that.

I would be worried about there being a few different metals touching each other. Ones going to expand at a different rate than the others leaving you with a stuck seat post.
