Best multi tool

I know many ppl carry tools around during rides

But does anybody carry multitools around? I mean... they do have MOST of the tools u realy need... right?

I have the crankbrothers M-19 and like it fairly well. It is nice to have a chain tool built in.

queerpunk 01-31-07 09:08 PM

i have a topeak. it's aight. also have a smaller park one. it's also aight. shrug.

jchou701 01-31-07 09:10 PM

I was thinking abotu getting that one from Park Tools... there's 3 different kinds.. mind as well get the one with the most tools..??? or no?

DerekRI 01-31-07 09:10 PM

topeak alien II... got basically everything you need...

DasProfezzional 01-31-07 09:16 PM

I got a Crank Bro.'s 17. Buy it.

estratton 01-31-07 09:38 PM

I have a topeak and I love it. Every tool I've needed so far when riding with the exception of a 15mm wrench, or a second pair of hands.

DerekRI 01-31-07 09:40 PM

mine actually does have a 15 on it... you wouldnt be able to torque it down too hard, but it would get the job done.. kinda ;)

manboy 01-31-07 09:42 PM

I carry a Crank Brothers, but you still need tire levers and a 15mm wrench. I still like it. I think I did use the chain tool once while I was out.

I have two crank bro's 19, and one 17. works as well as any multi tool, but I prefer them b/c I feel the wider, flatter design is easier to pack in my seat bags.

i carry an alien. it's rusted out, the 'lock' mechanism to keep the blades locked is broken. the two halves frequently come apart during torque. but i still carry it.

huge +1 on the crank bros w/ the chain tool. that will be my next one. too many friends love that one.

+2 on the crank bros 19. much less bulky than the topeak i had with an equal number of tools necessary for riding fixed.

Telix 01-31-07 09:58 PM

For my daily rides I just carry the Park IB-1 as I can do any adjustments/tightenings that would need to happen. I have a seperate chain tool for longer rides.

TreeUnit 01-31-07 10:39 PM

I carry a Park Tool MT-1. It's probably the least sexy multi-tool in existence (the pieces dont even fold out), but it's got everything I need.

Surferbruce 01-31-07 10:41 PM

i carry the basic crank brothers 5, just a few allen keys and a phillips.

mander 01-31-07 11:07 PM

I have a Blackburn toolmanator 2. It's basically two multis that nest together with a small spoke wrench that tucks inside one. It has

• Chain Tool
• Chain Retainer
• 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8mm Hex Wrenches
• Locking 8, 9, 10mm Box End Wrenches (still need a 15)
• Detachable 14-, 15-Gauge Spoke Wrench
• Flat Head, Phillips Screwdrivers
• Slip-joint Mini Pliers
• Knife
• Bottle Opener

Everything is nice hardened steel. Basically it's a bit much until you need to do some odd little thing, then it's just right.

So I'm trying to decide... I'm going with either the Cranksbrothers 19 or the Topeak Alien 2 - the difference is the Topeak Alien 2 has box wrenchs, chain hook, tire levers, a knife, and a bottle opener

someone help me decide... or some insight...

humancongereel 02-01-07 12:40 AM

This is the girl unit- not Ian.

I use the 24 piece Specialized multi-tool. Although I hate Specialized, this isn't bad--has the bottle opener, so I dig it more than the 19 Crank Bro. And cheap--like $25. Isn't the Alien a bit more?

did u move too?

on my commuter i have topeak alien

on my fixed gear bicycle i have crank bros 17

i also have a small black burn which belonged to my road bike

look at the bike and decide what tools you need

make sure you have what is needed at a minimum

then decide how much more you are willing to carry

My favorite is the Cool Tool, no longer made. Damn you Gerber!

jchou701 02-01-07 01:18 AM

The topeak alien II - seems to be more well known... the crankbrothers seems good too though... i don't really need a knife or a bottle opener

the only thing extra i might need is a 15mm wrench and tire levers - which most ppl bring as extra anyways right..

thanks for the input

i got a crank brothers 17 and the park tool two piece... quite frankly, i like the crankbros better. I rarely use the Park tools its not as efficient taking it apart and putting it back together, but it did come with a sweet little strap mount pouch.

I have that tool too but rarely use it now. I have no use for the wrenches. Back in the old mountain biking days, that tool was handy. Commuters with bunch of accessories on their bikes love that tool.
