Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? yeah, I stayed away from the tricycle comment because I assumed that and everything after it was a joke... or at least I hope it was.

Telling jokes when you are trying to explain your reasons for wanting to do something is a great way to be taken seriously.

Oh wait, no, it makes your arguements invalid because everybody things you're an idiot.

1) the first thing i criticized was him saying vaulters instead of vultures. i found that funny.
2) when i started riding fixed in 2003/2004, i rode with a brake. i eventually took it off, but now for the bike i ride daily, i have one on it again.
3) i really don't see the point in riding a brakeless bike if you are unsure of stopping yourself and have to ask people on the internet.
4) just because somebody signed up for an internet forum in a certain year doesn't mean that is when they started doing said activity. i didn't know about bike forums until i moved to dc, and signed up because a dc local told me to use it to find rides.
5) what ever. the dude is cocky and thinks he doesn't need to use a brake to learn to ride brakeless. that is arrogant, stupid, and a good way to hurt yourself.

edit: if you seriously think that the sign up date is the date that person started riding fixed, you have a serious social issue. just because somebody isn't on a forum doesn't mean they don't do said activity in real life. when i was in college i didn't have the internet at home, i didn't work at a place with computers, and i spent the rest of my time at school or doing projects. the minimal amount of time that i had left was spent on a bike (a couple decent rides per week). if you have an issue with the sign up date of a member, you need to get over yourself.

the guy came asking a question and then got riled over the answers he got. most of the answers (joking aside) were concerned about the safety aspect for the guy. guys here may joke around, but i don't think anyone wants to see another rider bite it trying something he's not ready for.

oh, and don't go belittling your fellow riders, it doesn't make any difference what date people signed on here, they are still entitled to post replies.

if you don't want the answers, don't ask the question.

ryand you made some comment about his mom and dad and their money which was lame. but whatev's — have at it. don't help a fellow rider out, just act superior and snotty.

i think you're mad because he didn't get riled, but just laughed at you guys for how seriously you're taking yourselves.

i did make that comment, and it was probably the wrong thing to say. if the OP has a problem with that comment, i would gladly make a public apology, but it still doesn't mean i think he should learn to ride brakeless without a brake.

if you want me to take that comment down, i will. i don't have a problem admitting when i am wrong, and i don't think i am superior to him. i think that if he wants to learn to ride without a brake, he should learn with a brake on there as a clutch. when you skip such an essential step, you can get hurt.

at the same time, it was good to hear him say that he was going to go get a helmet when he started.

well, lookin like the work day is over. i'm gonna go ride my bike in the cold.
have fun arqueing on the internet folks.

Well, good luck whatever you decide to do. Watching videos is helpful, but you really just need to get used to doing it. You'll figure out that you have a dominant foot, and you'll learn with that one. You'll then need to force yourself (well, at least I did) to learn with the other. You need to pull up with the front foot more than push down with the back. I didn't learn the balls on stem way, but then again, I don't have balls.

Seriously, be careful in traffic. Even once you're good, it's still inherently dangerous. I've been rriding brakeless for a year. I was overconfident one day last week and had my first brakeless accident.
Point being - even when you're good, sh*t can still go wrong.

Thanks bro. I don't think I will make the mistake again to ask a dumb question on here. Anyway, I am more into joking around when things get all like they did. The suggestion on youtube was a good one. I have been looking at some good stuff. I am pretty confident that I can learn a couple different techniques. Here is a cool video from youtube that was pretty cool. Looks like that dude is having fun and enjoying himself like I would like to without all the hassles.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMlfH4hB3AQ&NR

I don't even have to get on the bike to know what foot will be dominate for me. It will be my right one, but using both shouldn't be a big deal. I am ambidextrous in most things.

Oh yeah, ryand thanks for pointing out my misspelling of the vulture and thanks for the comment about my mother and father. Lost my mother two years ago, but it is all good. She died of cancer and I hope to ride cross the states and raise money for research next summer in her memory. No biggy though. It's all good.

Thanks for those that were cool to me. There are some really good people on here. One guy I bought parts from is sending me a different cog for nothing and he has been really helping me think things threw on building my bike up. Glad I found this place just for someone like that. Way down in Albuquerque, NM.

Hey dude, riding brakeless is easy. Tons of other people do it every day. They all learned quickly, you will too.

Additionally; I have yet to read a single thread on this forum OR hear of someone else through this forum that trashed their Pogliaghi/Guerciotti/San Rensho/Vanilla because they didn't know how to stop their bike and t-boned a car. Chill.

(edit) or any other kind of bike for that matter. But people were getting riled about the idea of this Guerciotti meeting its end in the back of a Ford Taurus or something.

Look closer. There were a good couple. Of course, they don't go "This guy opened a door in front of me. With a brake or better ninja skills I could have saved my ass but as it is I just slammed into it". They go "This ****** doored me. There was no way to stop in time"

Almost all would be too embarased to post about it - or as Farkas said, would just spin the thread.
