i clicked the link and checked out the other shots of the court.
it looks small, but fun.

what are those boards? cement?
do they have any flex to them? I could just see me checking someone right over the edge.

i guess that would be funny tho, so,,, yeh

anyone else got a polo bike?

fatbat 05-17-07 11:26 AM

luckily we gots lots of POLO coverage up in NYC!

so tink you gots a 650 up front?
tried it, thot it might lower things closer to the action, didnt like the turn radius or whatever

veggiemafia 05-17-07 12:13 PM

Well, at least I don't feel bad about using my 2002 Fuji Track as a beater, because you use a 2005(?) as a polo bike.

The boards are cement and the only thing that flexes when hitting them is you, so we try not to. Small court perfect for 3 on 3. The boards makes the game a lot faster and more action packed and adds a little hockey tactics.

Question for all you polo players... don't mean to hijack, but I'm curious to know what gearing you use for polo. Something more, uh... spinny... I assume?

SD Fixed 05-18-07 10:11 AM

We need this in San Diego...

Jumbo 05-19-07 04:33 AM

I run 40-19, but most others on our court just uses their everyday gearing, and consider my lower gearing cheating... No doubt its easier not at least on your knees with a lower gear.

PLayed for the first time yesterday in London most people rocked up with their No.1 bikes few spills but i think the beaters will make an appearance next time out

The above-posted polo bike is specifically geared at 38x18

This allows for quick acceleration and lazy skids, but the biggest advantage is standing still
when the ball rolls a few feet outside my arm's reach,
and especially if my cranks are in an akward position, it let's me get there first.

Consider this when trackstanding with 49X16 (my daily gearing): How quick are you off the start?

Anyways, the Ottawa players and even some of the Philly crew I saw at this year's ESPI had even smaller!
Closer to 30x20. It was rediculous but it definitely gave the rider an advantage.

If you're building a polo bike, it's an element you should not overlook.

Look at Radball bikes. Those have tiny ratios for all the same reasons

XianRL 08-02-11 11:34 PM

Yeah, I'm not alone in Columbia in having a 32/22 (about 1.45) setup. Fixed players tend not to go that low of course. It seems having these low ratios offers a major advantage on tourney-sized courts. Seldom do I hit my top speed, but I like my ratio because it helps beat others to the ball.
