brown hubs
the only brown hubs ive found were the milwalke brand but they only have 32 hole anyone know where i could get 36 hole brown hubs?
Surly had a limited run of hubs that were a sort of brown-copper color. Q may still have some in stock.
If "Q" stands for Quality Bike Parts, then yep, they've still got some on hand. They come as a set, and if you're looking to get your hands on a pair of the track hubs, I'd do it soon, because there are only 31 pairs left, according to the site.
i'm not sure if they have a separate supplier or not but i believe that thebikebiz also has some
anybody have a picture of the surly hubs?
Hazaa!
http://www.thebikebiz.com/photos/TRK-HUB-SURLY02-2.jpg I just bought a pair of the standard Surly's in black, but I must say, those are quite sexy. As long as you don't mate them with purple Deep-V's or anything. |
You could request a set from Phil Wood, but brown is an odd color, so who knows when they'll do a run of those (or if they even will).
Edit: Oooh, those are nice. |
I almost got a set of those Jim Brown Surly hubs, but decided to get just a read black hub at the last minute instead. Wasn't ready to throw down the cash for an entire wheelset just yet.
the surlys are 32 hole :(
looks like it's time to buy some 32 hole rims ;)
thanks for the pic, those look really good. I need to see if I can find a set somewhere now.
Oh, ****. My bad, I thought Surly had 'em available in 36 as well. I picked up a set the day they were announced. Now I'm just waiting for the other parts of the equation and certains planets to come into alignment.
Seriously though. If'n I was dead set on brown hubs, I wouldn't be concerned with spoke holes. Brown hubs are the turquoise unicorns of the cycling component industry.

Have the shells powder coated.
does powder coating hubs mess up the spoke holes and bearing races? is it a problem? I was curious about doing this to a set of hubs...
some of the phil hubs were coated right? I can imagine that if there was too much paint that it might. You could easily talk to the powdercoater and have them stuff something in there. Or you could file it out on the back end. If they are alloy, you wouldn't have to worry about rust. and the spoke would cover the hole.
I'm going to look into it for an old 2sp bendix auto coaster hub. I'll let you know what I find out. |
