Decent, cheap chainring/crankset

Hey all,

After spending far too much time reading the archives, I've finally registered to the forum.

Anyway, I've got a 2006 Fuji Track that I got dirt cheap complete. I'm slowly collecting parts and am looking for a decent crankset (with chainring).

The rules:
-44t, 45t or 46t chainring in silver/chrome/alloy
-165mm cranks in silver/chrome/alloy
-can take a beating (it's my everyday bike)
-the cheaper the better

Any suggestions? Anyone ride that low-end Pake crankset? How about the IRO?

bulletproof cranks with a rocket ring! no need to spend any more than that. comes out to $40-50, i'd guess.

What's wrong with the one on it?

DMo 02-12-07 02:03 PM

It's bigger than I'd like, for starters. It's a 48-tooth and the RPM crankset feels cheap.

Plus, I'm switching the black components to silver/chrome.

IRO 46t + BB ftw.

Are you looking to replace the BB as well? I believe the RPM cranks use a 103mm jis taper? If this is the case, you will need a new 110mm BB ($20) to run the IRO cranks. I'm not sure what spindle length the pake cranks require. You might also consider the sugino RDs, which would work well with your present bottom bracket (assuming you can find them with the proper chainring).

FWIW, I have been using an IRO crankset and BB for about a month with no problems.

The Sugino RD only comes in a 48-tooth, no?

I know the Zen Messenger series is available in a smaller ring.

I have a Zen Messenger in 45t. It's not exactly cheap at $50-60 just for the ring, though.

Keep the cranks, and upgrade the cog and lockring instead. That's where your money will be better served. Plus, you can change the ratio to you liking so that a 48t in front isn't too big.

but he wants to change everything from silver to black. Keep in mind what is really important around here.

Ha.

Cog and lockring will be changed too.

dutret 02-12-07 03:25 PM

the point is that nothing you get cheap is going to be substantially better then the rpm you already have. And the chainring will probably be worse. If you can't live with black so be it but don't delude yourself into thinking this is an upgrade.

i'd say go with oven cleaner on the black, polish that sucker up and you got some silver cranks. save your money for something that's not cheap.

that being said my bulletproof/rocket ring combo works great and was cheap.

I believe a recent poll put NOS/used Shimano 600 as runner up for the official cheap crankset of bfssfg.
