Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Seriously, i get where i need to go in 1/3rd of the time public transportation takes... and without being sandwiched between people while practicing balancing at every stop and paying 2 bucks.

Especially true on the B line. It's great fun rolling down Comm Ave and effortlessly passing a train packed to the gills with kids.

By the by, one reason to LOVE Boston: Night of the Barrels @ Extreme Beer Fest Too late to get tickets now but if folks are into drinking large quantities of craft brews, beeradvocate has a few of these fests throughout the year so it's a good thing to keep an eye out for.

Why's everyone so obsessed about the Mexican food? Boston's for Indian and Thai food.

I think we're losing sight of the point here. They could be teleporting the friggin' burritos in from Chihuahua, but we'd still be talking about a city where HAPPY HOUR IS ILLEGAL.

Also, several people in this thread are clearly mistaking the antiquated trolley cars used to move tourists and college students around for a public transportation system.

Grew up in Boston and loved it.

Moved to Rochester for 6 years (school and grad school) and went car-free at the end.

I'm back in Boston at my family's place, hunting for jobs in Berlin, Chicago, Vancouver and a few others. I'd still go for Rochester over Boston, almost any day.

(What is in Rochester that is calling for your move?)

Even Rochester is bike-able, has a tremendous public market, a solid co-op for groceries not found at said market, 2 amazing independent film houses on the same street, lots of friendly folks, cheap rent, and lots of good food. In addition, there's the Eastman Theater with a plethora of amazing music almost daily. We've even got like 40 hipsters at Java's and the Bug Jar. Probably less than 15 fixed-gear riders present, in the whole of the city....

Boston is very difficult, expensive, and in many ways backwards. I don't hate it but am curious why it gets so much hype. I'm very ready to go to a place where I can live happily and comfortably with my bicycle, and not feel so alone, or threatened.

I just moved down to outside providence, I miss boston so much. I was up there sunday for the anonymous scientology protest and picked up a bunch of burritos from Boca Grande to take home with me. I feel so much more comfortable riding my bike around Boston then I ever do in the rural crapitude of Rhode Island.

There was no where near enough 24/7 stuff in Boston, and I hated how Brighton was crazy busy during the school year with a bunch of out of town dbags. If I had my druthers I would move back to Boston, probably live in Somerville. I liked it over there on Winter Hill. Close but not too close.

Oh ya, and Pho is the cure for AIDS, cancer, hepatitis, hipster, and it is the godfather to any child I may or may not have and be aware of yet.

They are starting to invade the brighton side too. There were always fights breaking out between yaaa dudes (probably over who's collar is popped the most) in front of my place when I lived there.

Yes, if people stopped coming here to go to school, party, watch sports, music, and dance, meet girls, sail, row, make movies, and work, it would be a great place to live! Not to mention the 18 million tourists!

We have killer mex here in LA but try to find a good bar. 10 million people. 3 good bars. and you have cheesesteaks and pizza which don't suck either.
