Axles... with the same thickness of quick release...

And nothing.
I have this univega, and I am planning on purchasing a new wheelset for numerous reasons. But, the fork dropouts aren't big enough for normal sized axles. So, I am wondering if any of you know a an affordable front hub, with the axle the same size as a quick release axle? I rather it not actually be quick release, for obvious reasons.. I understand it'll most likely have allen head bolts, which is fine by me. So help me out!!!

qr axles are 10mm so there shouldn't be a problem if there is just file out the drop outs a little bit

just get a formula hub and a decent file and have at it

I think the slimmer dropout opening is meant for an axle that is filed flat on both sides, not a smaller diameter axle.

Well that would make sense too, I just mentioned QR because that's what was there when I got the bike.

What are some companies that make axles with flat sides?

They aren't rare. Any bike shop should have them. You'd be better off getting it from them anyway since its so small and cheap. Shipping would kill any good internet deal. As a bonus, you could take them your frame and they would sell you the correct part instead of hoping the online description is accurate.

Also, my first post was a guess, not a statement of fact. I know only of axles that are solid, solid with flat sides, quick release and the big fat downhill types. There might be many others but the flat sided axle seemed to be an answer to your problem, so I posted my thought. The bike shop will know for sure.

or just file a regular axle. Not that tough.

I'm a bit afraid of filing, in fear of making one drop out larger than the other.

they problem is if he has or gets a front hub with sealed cart bearigs he will not have much luck replacing the axle it is much easier to remove the 1/2mm of metal than deal with sourcing an axle for a formula hub then repressing the bearings

also its just an old univega frame you won't hurt t by doing this

A "normal" sized QR front hub axle is 9mm with 100mm between locknuts. This standard has been around for many years. Could your fork be damaged? You might take it to your local shop and see what fits.

also, some of these old rigs took a really small axle on the front, I think it was some x/16" size but it's like 8mm metric, so you can just file out the dropout to 9mm as other suggested. Go slow and you won't screw it up, though you do need a round file.

if you get a long flat bastard file you can file both at the same time removing appx the same amount of material I had to do this to several old japanese bikes an dthey are still rollin hawd

you could always just get bolt on qr,s. pretty much a qr that you use a hex key to tighten and loosen instead of the lever
