Bullhorns and quill stems

I've heard that getting the profile designs bullhorns into a quill stem can be a problem. Is this true? Are there any other bullhorns that don't work so well with quill stems? Syntace work ok, right?

aside from possibly scratching them during installation i don't see why you might have a problem as long as the clamp diameter is correct

Depending on the stem, it can be a bit of a pain to get them on. If you lever open the stem gently with a screwdriver, and put a bit of chain lube on the bars, that can make things a bit easier. I've got syntace bars in (with a good bit of cursing).

just get a 26.0mm stem and you should be fine

On bars that maintain the same diameter throughout the bar (like profile apparently) you can't get it around the bends. Bars that were meant to work with quill stems will have the clamp area slightly larger than the rest of the bar.

Has anyone successfully gotten the profiles on?

Amanda, repost this on DCfixed, chances are Peter or John might be able to help you with this.

Not me. The Profiles I have are 26mm end to end so they are virtually impossible to get them through traditional non-open faced quill stems. These bullhorns were meant to be used with open faced stems. I've had no problem with most other bullhorns where only the clamp area bulges to 26mm.

This is only true of the "stoker TT" model. Others, like the "airwing", have the bulge in the middle, and should work fine in a quill stem (though I have never tried, myself).

+1. I have the Airwings and they fit a 26mm quill without problems.

this is great news! i recently got profile bullhorns and i'm getting this itch about putting them on. the stem's a black anodized cinelli with 26.0 drop bars. the bullhorns are 26.0 also. i just hope they don't get scratched.
