sugino 75s + phil BB
going to open up an oldold can of worms and ask if anyone has resolved this once and for all by actually installing this pair on a bike?
remember...not spindle length, taper is the question... the closest thing i could come to a definitive answer was from this thread, additional bold is my own. this too

No one has ever indicated there is a compatibility issue to us when using the "standard" taper. We have tested the 75 cranks here and determined that "standard" taper is the best fit. However I have not actually ever measured or tested the Sugino BB so I can't tell you what it is. I know the crank is JIS based on the set we were sent and it fit just fine. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Thanks, Brent and Someone can feel free to send me a dead sugino BB if they like |
works fine
ive been on that combo for 3 years now took it on a tour around europe if you have the goods already put them together |
Yes, works fine.

I've been using this combo for about 3 months. Phil BB is 108mm with a "standard" taper. My chainline up front is ~43-44mm with BB ~1mm off center to bring the chainring closer to the frame. So at least for me it's a little wide, but works well with my cog which is a tad more than 42mm from the centerline as well. I kind of wish the spindle was 1-2mm shorter so I could center the BB with perfect chainline, but I guess that's why it's adjustable...

Yes, SG75 is JIS. Yes, it fits fine on a Phil BB. I'm using the 111mm version because the clearance looked like it was going to be an issue with the 108mm version. I didn't have a single taper issue in the four months that I rode it before it got packed up for the winter.

now, 108mm v 111mm. would clearance matter though since you're just going to move it out or in depending on which one you get? that is, 108mm may put you a little close initially but you're just going move it out anyways. and 111mm gives you space but you're bringing it in. |
I think you mean exactly the opposite. With a 108 spindle, you would have to move the drive side out, moving the non-drive side towards the BB. Now if your non-drive crank is within a mm or two using a proper 109 BB (like mine was), moving the crank in a little might put it right on the bottom bracket shell (in which case, you'd be screwed and would have to get the longer spindle anyway). I chose to err on the side of caution and asked the guys at Phil. They suggested the 111 and it works like a dream.

I got a 108 JIS spindle. works fine because it's adjustable....though I admit the clearance between spider and chainstay is probably under a millimeter. I'm not sure if that's because of the spindle length though - the chainline is right on. frame might just be real tight right there.

im riding the combo with a 109 works perfect and smooth

Uh, does Phil make a 109?
