I have a Panasonic Sport 500 fixed gear conversion. The frame is 58cm center to center, built with TANGE tubing, lugged. The bike comes with TANGE bottom bracket, TANGE headset, SR stem, alloy flip and chop bars, DIA-COMP brakeset, NEW Specialized seat, NEW Soma 20t cog, Sugino Super Maxy cranks, Alloy Rigida Made in France wheels laced to Maillard Hub. The gearing is 52x20. The bike can be seen anytime before 2pm Monday-Friday between San Jose to Mountain View and if you wanna see it over the weekend you need to come down to Lathrop the city in between Tracy and Stockton. Calls only over the weekday. (408) 799-8119

whats the deal with the second question?
unless you mean what purpose will the bike serve...
"why are you buying a bike" is just an dumb question. sounds like he shouldn't buy a bike.

I'd say, save your money really unless you've ridden and really loved the bike. The frames ok but the components are little iffy for 300 bones.

SR stem, alloy flip and chop bars - probably all quite cheap and noodly.

Sugino Super Maxy cranks - Cheap crankset (old BMX cranks with schwagged spider) I have no love for the Super Maxy cranks for fixed gears.

Alloy Rigida Made in France wheels laced to Maillard Hub - Not great rim potentially with old hub, which may or may not be a track hub.

All in all, this bike as specified is not worth 300 bones.

i'd spend a little more on a entry level fixed/free flop hub and buy new.

but no harm in checking it out. if he's serious he'll let you test ride.

When I was a kid (the era of this bike) My Dad had a Sport DELUXE and I had a regular sport. The regular sport was boat anchor compared to the sport deluxe. I don't know about the "500" model, so which way does the 500 lean: lead noodly pipe or super light and stiff. Sheesh I wish pop kept the Sport Deluxe that wasn't too bad of a bike, but it certainly wasn't $300 new.

The more I think about it, buy a Pista.

Timdoug: the Panasonic Sport 500 frame & fork weigh 7.5 pounds. It is a nice frame, but as you said, on the lower end of the Panasonic stable of 1980s road frames. I don't think that is a terrible weight for a steel mid-level road bike.

check it out..

I actually test rode this bike eralier this week...It being a road frame it was a little big for me...I'm 5'10" but it was pretty light compared to other conversions out there. All the parts seemed well put together and it rode pretty solid...only thing that kept me from buying it was that the dismount off the bike was a little too close for comfort....heck I even test skid on the bike, the guy was cool about it. Maybe that's why he dropped the price to $280. I've seen other conversions out there that are just crap...but it is a suicide hub conversion, though I felt secure enough to skid since it had a BB lock ring on it. Never the less $400 for a KHS is a steal but they come in oddball frame sizes...50,53,57...no room for inbetweeners like me. You can always build your own bike...heck ask the guy if he can help you out...

I work in the audio/video industry, panasonic makes fine electronics, not top of the line, but certainly not "chitty"

I can't speak for the bikes.
