Hip packs

anyone have any experience with the various brands? I'm really intersted in getting a custom made soon so i can get it for the summer. anyone have any ideas about helpful features? i'm thinking about seagull, re-load or zugster. definitely needs to be waterproof, big enough to hold a waterbottle phone and misc small bits.

Even when I was working I never could understand the need for one of those.

is a hip pouch just a cool name for a fanny pack?

guerillaidiom 02-24-07 10:33 PM

kind of pointless ayuh?

They seem like a decent idea for the summertime when it's hot and you don't want to carry a full sized bag with you. A little something for your wrench and wallet and lock, if it's big enough a small pump and levers and patch kit. Freight Baggage makes a decent looking one. Don't think I'd ever buy one, though.

What you are describing is a seat bag.

doofo 02-24-07 10:47 PM

a custom butt bag may be more to your liking but you might find what you need in some kind of small hiking/hydration fanny pack

i let me bikes carry their own tools and make them carry my water too

im just like that

j-lie 02-24-07 10:48 PM

fannypack= hip pack. yes, but most aren't waterproof or well made.

A hip pack is pretty useless when you have messenger bag. yeah, but carrying a huge bag when all you need to carry is a book, u-lock and a waterbottle can kinnda suck on long rides. i'm gonna be riding a lot this summer and i'm gonna use the hip bag when i don't have to carry tons of ****. and my stupid hipster bike didn't come with braze ons.

so you can flame me all you want. but i'm sure there's someone out there who uses a hip pack for the same reasons i want one.

That doesn't leave your person when you're not around your bike.

At least in Maine, most people on the street will probably heckle you for wearing a fanny pack instead of heckling you for being a hipster.

j-lie 02-24-07 10:53 PM

also i think zugster and reload hip packs double as seat bags.

Retem 02-24-07 10:53 PM

I used a hip puch for a week it kinda sucked just extra weight

j-lie 02-24-07 10:54 PM

very true, but if i had one i could wip out a u-lock to shut them up

Retem 02-24-07 10:59 PM

thats what you have back pocket for

Bikkhu 02-24-07 11:01 PM

Cut off BDU trousers.

j-lie 02-24-07 11:03 PM

my u-lock is too big and my pocket is too small.

also i just carry my bag everywhere now so the lock goes in there. i rarely use it though cause there's not much demand for a beater track bike in the lobstering/fishing community.

The whole point of a hip pack is less bulk without having to compromise what you're wearing. Being comfortable. Incidentally, I was talking to a friend about hip packs, she likes using hers while wearing things with no pockets (skirts, dresses). Not as bulky as a whole bag, you don't have to worry about it getting stolen off your bike, and you can wear whatever you want. These are a plus for some, not worth it for others, we get it.

I just got this one as an experiment for the upcoming summer which I'm sure will be too brutal for a messenger bag (PHX AZ). I can hold all the tools, pump, 2 tubes and my phone in it. I think it's gonna work out great. I've ridden with it for this week and I really like it. It's on sale for $15.

i have just a standard black 'fanny pack', i loop the strap around one leg of the shackle then just run the strap around with the lock between me and it, stays up fine. can fit flat crap, extra tube, small pump even. only problem is i have to unclip it to get the lock off, but no biggie.

666pack 02-24-07 11:35 PM

i would only use a hip pack if i was riding in the summer and didn't feel like keeping my cigarettes / wallet in my pockets, but in the summer i wear shants that have easily closable / accessable pockets.

dblock 02-24-07 11:37 PM

i won't lie i want one. more convenient to have your u lock ready without taking your **** off

jonb 02-24-07 11:38 PM

freight baggage makes a great one.

i like hip packs.
