-this guy is looking for a deal on a lock for his girlfriend who has a sirrus bike ($550 for a brand new 07 model).
-the insurance difference doesn't apply to her. i wouldn't trust getting it back even if it did.
-the bulldog offers the same beefy visual deterrent, cutting deterrent, and pick deterrent for $13 less ($22 vs $35) and 1lb lighter (which is significant when we're talking about 2lbs v 3lbs). again, the only time i can see 4 bolts coming into play would be situations that would destroy the bike.
-both scored a silver grade from soldsecure

there is no reason for a girl with a cheap used bike to get the pitbull mini over the bulldog mini.

Two I managed to get open by whacking them with a hammer, per the instructions on the Todson site. One refuses to open no matter what.

I use a pitbull full size; it locks up to many things, but it's heavy as a mofo. 33 bucks is nothing in the grand scheme of things. especially if you have to walk home.

my onguard pitbull mini is just the right fit to secure the downtube and front wheel to a parking meter. depends on the clearance of your bike though. depends on your city, but out here theres parking meters EVERYWHERE. . .

also, i removed the mounting bracket hardware from the u lock itself because it scratches the **** out of your paint! (i have an older one, looks like they changed it a little bit)

That's great if you spend all your time in the CBD, but once you are outside of there you are screwed. At least that's been my experience.

Remember we are talking about a lock for a young woman who has her first real bike. I highly doubt she'll want to lug around a heavy chain.

My wife would rather eat glass than lug around our 6kg Abus chain. The Brute U-lock is alright though.....to each their own....

Just remember:

A good lock costs tens of dollars. A bad lock can cost hundreds.

i had a kona jake the snake locked up in center city philly to a bike rack with a single krypto u lock (cheaper model but still a krytonite) one morning at 8am.

came out at 4pm to no bike, the lock was laying on the ground popped open; still works!

with my chain and a mini u i now lock up 2 bikes in the same spot everyday and haven't had a problem in a couple years...

MORAL: in the city people can and will defeat your u lock for a shiny new(er) bike (maybe worth 50-600 bucks?)

Sucks. As someone else pointed out here (maybe it was you), those upside-down U shaped things everyone locks their bikes to in Philly are only held down by a couple of easy to remove nuts and bolts anyway.

This is also why uglified bikes are better than shiny ones.

another vote for Pitbull Mini

I agree with the gent who mentioned Ulocks not being stolen or broken around here in LA. People moan about losing their bikes to theft (and others believe their professional lock was broken) only to find the bike was sitting on the porch or cheaply locked to a signpost or some other easily broken method.

These chain locks are also heavy but aren't that much more than a ULock:

I have a pitbull Mini and it is a bit heavier than I would like, but it is very secure. You also get 5 different keys with it, which is a nice option. I bought it from REI- they had the best price. The NY Mini can be easily fit into a back pocket.. the Pitbull mini has a bit of trouble fitting in- (thicker bars). Let us know what you choose.

REI notes the Pitbull Mini is supposedly only 2 lbs:
