Hollow Axle and IRO Hubs- Is This Possible?
I'd like to replace the solid axle on my IRO hubs with a hollow one so I can use some Pitlock locking skewers I have in my parts bin. Is this possible? Thanks.

i don't think it's impossible, but i don't know where you'd get a replacement axle to fit. fwiw i just replaced the bearings in my rear IRO hub, and removing the axle out was straightforward. the bearings come to rest on a lip on the axle as they are pressed into the hub shell. https://www.formulahubs.com/ lists the specs on their hubs.
sheldon says:
Axles are not readily changeable, so these really can't be converted to quick release.

The axles are quite readily changeable, it's just like replacing the bearings, on which there are instructions on this site if you search. Harris themselves are doing this in-house after their supplier screwed up and sent them all of their hubs spaced 120. As for going QR, it can be done but there are no advantages and many disadvantages.
Edit: Reread the OP, I guess if you want to use locking skewers that's one valid reason to go QR.

yeah, i've done it. it was kind of a diy solution, but it worked well while i ran it. i think it would've worked permanently, but decided to switch back to solid axles when the wheel changed frames.
instead of those little lips (you'll understand what i mean when you take the bearings out) i used a regular hexagonal nut from a hardware store. i didn't use loctite (edit, loctite to secure the nuts, NOT on the bearings), but in retrospect should have.
i described what i did in this thread:
https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ub+hollow+axle
next time i change my bearings i'll do a tutorial with photos, but that might be awhile.

Provided you use a decent skewer in the back the disadvantages are pretty minimal and there are none whatsoever in the front short of a freak accident where it gets caught in someone elses spokes but you manage to staty upright and then it falls out before you can stop.

there are lots of valid reasons to use a quick release. i can lock up both of my wheels with a mini u by Quickly Releasing my front wheel.

Right, if QR's work for you, have fun, I just think the advantages are minimal. For racing, yeah, they're mandatory, but that's not what most of us do with our bikes. They also murder your axle threads, and locking up with my fork naked makes me cringe every time. Also, I find getting a QR wheel in and out of a fork with lawyer lips to be about the same time wise and more of a PITA than wrenching out a nutted wheel. Getting QR axles to use pitlocks is one thing, but my point is there's not enough advantage to them to make it worth changing for any bike you'd have formulas on (cue some nitpicker who rides SS CX on formulas).

Yeah, all of my bikes have already said hello to my little friend, except in the case of forks I might later sell, but when I stop along the bike path to show somebody how to change a tire on his trek 1200 (side note: you ever notice how these guys always have tubes or a pump, but never both?) I'm ok with them having lawyer lips.
