The bike without a home.

Here is a cool (I think) bike, built by one of my favorite mechanics. It is a doublespeed, which lacks a catagory on these forums but I thought you guys might appreciate it. It's built with a White Industries Dos ENO freewheel. He thinks it's pretty cool and that it'll get more use than it did as a singlespeed in his somewhat hilly neck of the woods. The wheels are also laced three-leading-three-trailing.

I always tell him: "Of all the bike mechanics I know...you're definitely one of them!"

Nice. Can you tell us just how quite or noisey is that freewheel?

dustinlikewhat 03-01-07 09:12 PM

very cool, is that the intended use of that freewheel? if not, good thinking!

dustinlikewhat 03-01-07 09:14 PM

ps, now I have an idea as to what to do with my schwinn after i switch the parts off to the iro frame.

Landgolier 03-01-07 09:47 PM

Hilarious, I love it. Also, every time I see a 3L3T wheel not looking at it directly from the side and realize how unremarkable it looks, the urge to rebuild my wheels that way disappears.

I just saw one of these today. Pretty cool. I didn't think about using a derailleur, though... I think that kinda disassimilates it from the singlespeed category. That's just like a fully geared bike with the limit screws set poorly.

trackstar10 03-01-07 10:07 PM

just one question... why the hell do you need a 300 dollar hub when you have a derailleur?

DannyRocks 03-01-07 10:10 PM

Looks to me like its the White ENO freewheel, not hub. I could be wrong though.

It's about average in the noise department, but the tone is different than most freewheels and somehow sounds more solid.

Not the intended use I don't think, in fact he had to use 1/8" chain to get it to work reliably.

DannyRocks is right, it's just a crusty old freewheel hub with a bajillion dollar freewheel installed.

Who wants a better pic of the wheel?

Aeroplane 03-02-07 07:11 AM

That is definitely awesome. I love how it walks the line between a serious build-up and a junkster.

Having a shifter and derailleur set up for just two gears that are only 2 teeth apart is just too hilarious for words. Yay for the builder!

LóFarkas 03-02-07 07:17 AM

Hmmm, that's pretty silly. And pretty awesome.

Also, I'm loving that frame. Not sure about the blue saddle, but it's a really handsome bike.

The bike certainly looks cool, but I gotta agree remove the derailleur and the shifter, and it's lighter, quieter, and easier to maintain

max-a-mill 03-02-07 09:07 AM

or just put a 7spd freewheel on and really use that derailleur for what it's intended for... if your gonna use a derailleur already, why limit yourself to only 2 gears?

blah, blah, blah. because, that's why.

i think this bike is really cool, and it's perfect, just the way it is. when i was working with a bike coop, we had a lot of fun building silly bikes just for fun* - not unlike this one, but usually with much jankier parts. bikes don't always have to be about what's the most practical. sometimes it's just about what you have around and what you want to build - maybe, something you haven't seen before.

*though we never managed the oft-discussed eccentric wheel...

Maybe because the two-speed white freewheel weighs less
than a multi-speed cassette?

So many haters.

why did he use a clamp on housing stop on the chainstay instead of routing the cable THROUGH the chainstay as the bike was made for?

laziness cause the bike is just a joke anyway would be my guess. Internally routed cables can be a *****.

+1
I LOVE kooky bikes like that it's AWESOME.

well, those are particularly easy to route.... Im sure he spent more time looking for that housing stop/finding bottle cages and housing that matched his pedals than it would take to feed a cable through a hole.

I don't think the gear ratio changes enough when you shift gears on that bike. It's either a 16/18 tooth or a 17/19 tooth freewheel. That's like shifting from 7th gear to 8th gear on an old 10 speed road bike. I think that freewheel was intended to be paired with two chainrings that also differ by 2 teeth. Then you get a reasonable change in gear ratio when you move the chain from the small chainring / large cog to the large chainring / small cog. Granted you have to loosen the rear wheel to change gears.

If you had a sense of humor, you would be getting a joke right now.

Hmmm...I don't think he realized that the frame was set up that way. It's been a single speed as long as he's owned it. I bet he'll change it after he finds out. Lazy is one thing he is not.

As for the speculation of the practicality of this ride, I don't think he's planning on marketing this idea. This was done to make a fun training bike, if you don't think it makes sense then that's your burden to bear.

I have seen enough threads on gear ratio to know that the difference between a 16 and 18 is significant enough. To some here it means the difference between a man and a wuss.

he should put a triple on the front :D
