I've been kind of thinking that also lately, why not spend 300 on a Mark V Pro with better tubing and IMO better looks? Steamroller owners seem to swear by them though, so I dunno.

1) try building up a $300 mark v frame with components of equal quality to the steamrollers for under $666. good luck.
2) surly has reputation for tank-like construction
3) fat tire clearance
in any event, mark v and steamroller are both awesome bikes. steamroller is my personal preference, seeing as I own and cherish one. ill post pics soon.
also, in answer to the fender question from above, the sks race blades work great on this frame for anyone who is curious.

My Steamroller has held up pretty well. You honestly can't go wrong with their complete bike purchase deal.
