ebay fixie
 

Hi everyone, I'd been looking out for suitable frames for a fixie for a while, but then came across this:

It's by some people that regularly sell converted fixies on ebay for 9.99 plus shipping plus 35 boxing fee. So essentially its probably around 90$. Are there any concerns I should have about this bike? I feel despite the boxing fees and shipping it might be better than getting a frame and building up because the wheels are going to cost more than that anyway.

How tall are you Simon? I am 6'4" and ride a 59 c-c bike, that bike is for TALL guys... :)

Hey Joe, I'm 6 5", all my height is in my legs too. Nobody realises I'm tall when I'm sitting down as I have a very average trunk size. I normally ride a 63cm and still have to use an extra long seatpost to get the leg length sorted.

Sounds good, my 59cm (60cm c-t) Klein is a bit small, I should have gone for a 61cm. 65cm just LOOKS to big. I say go for it, I cant imagine you will have much of a bidding war on this one. :)

woah yeah i think a 65 would be too big, but this ones only a 62. I'd consider a 64, I know Fuji do them, but I've never heard of a 65 before!

You guys make me feel so short at 5'7" hahaha Won't be alot of competition on that one, I've seen his auctions before they end anywhere from $50-200 depending on the frame. Seems like a good starter setup to me atleast, 700c wheels which have already be redished to work with single speed setup. It looks like he makes money by converting the bikes to single speed then sellinng the other components separately.

My only concern was the 27" wheels. Not that there was anything wrong with them. I would just rather have 700c's. Doesn't matter I didn't win. I would like to add a fixie to my stable.

I don't have their email address but I can always ask the seller a question. It doesn't sound like it's too feasable to go look at the bike because it's already boxed up. Thanks for the offer though

Nice bike. Is that a road bike stem with a mountain bike handlebar? I thought MTN bike handlebars had different daimeters than the road one and it won't work? Or is that a mtn bike stem?

I am thinking about doing the same thing, that is the reason for the questions.

That is a Coda road stem and Easton Flat bar. I had the 2 laying around and tried them together and they fit so...:confused: :D

I would but I don't have it, ebay hasn't listed it. The only way to do it is to ask the bidder a question which to do you need to be a registered ebay user. Once they have replied to you then you will know their email address but until then you're in the dark.

I'm now debating whether to buy or not. I'm leaving the country soon to go back to the UK and am already flying my roadbike out. I'd either have to ship the bike which would be very expensive or I'd have to leave it with a friend and hope that I'll come back to the states in the near future to pick it up. Maybe I should just try and find a fixie in the UK but there doesn't seem to be such an easy opportunity for picking fixed gears up :(

Sounds good. Time to dig around my pile of junk and see what I can slap together. This thing is gonna be a Frankenstine, but that is the beauty of it.

A friend of mine bought a fixed/single speed conversion from Ebay and it had a
stripped pedal thread on one crank.It had one sew up rim and one clincher.He had to spend some big money on it, but the end result was an excellent bike.
I sent him the address of this forum,maybe he will comment on it.

i guess the days of the 9.99 fixies are gone... about how much did all the shipping total? the auction is starting at $79... would it be cheaper/easier to do the conversion on my own?
also, im about 5'7... is a 51 a proper size for me? my current schwinn is like a 49 and i feel like im going to flip over the bars when i start going downhill... but then again, it is a POS.

I wouldn't recommend buying one from applecart two. There has been some issue with the way he handles the lock ring. YMMV, just what I've read here.

And check out that crank. It looks like there was an issue with removing the pedal.

It's not an issue exclusive to Applecart. Without a track cog, and using a bottom-bracket lock ring, you are always going to run the risk of spinning the cog on a hard back-pedal. Loc-tite be damned, if you are a masher, eventually it's gonna spin.

Caveat: I purchased a road bike that had been converted to a fixie ala applecart. Within the first three months of owning the bike, I think that only the frame, headset/fork and front wheel/tire remained from the original. I have swapped out and overhauled everything else. If I had to do it over, and knew about this forum and Sheldon, etc., I would have bought a frame and built the bike myself. Since I was flying blind at the time, seeing what goes into a completed conversion, and not spending too much money was worth it for a first time effort. The second effort will be built from the ground up.
