you guys in the uk are getin a raw deal in the state atac cleats can be had for around 15bucks

I am a fan of Eggbeaters and had a good customer service experience when I first received two left pedals when I got them on Ebay and then had the problem that the grease/dust cap would loosen and felt slushy with new cleats. I sent the pedals back, they rebuild them, replaced the spindle, gave me extra caps, and sent them back. No pulling out problems but the cleats are said to wear quicker than with other pedals but they are designed that way because it is cheaper to replace the cleats than the entire pedal.

My friend just snapped a main bar on his Time pedals. He knew they were aging and pulled up hard to not get nailed by a cabbie in DC. He was already planning to replace them with a new pair for his track bike and put his old (now half dead pair) on his road bike.

yeah i have met people who have had eggbeaters break on em'
i have eggbeaters candy c and have come unclipped at wrong times

I find it almost impossible to accidentally unclip from crank bros. system. Unless you have really worn out cleats, or you move your foot wildly (and/or unhumanly) while pedalling.

aTACs

In my experience, eggbeaters are great pedals:

Super easy to get into or out of
They let you pivot your ankles around a bunch which can be nice for track stands or stretching
They look cool and are light


But they have a few key problems:

They aren't all that smooth because of the bushings and single set of bearings
They have a fragile spindle
They have to be rebuilt/greased to hell pretty often
The end caps are so soft they get chewed to hell, but are the only thing maintaining correct tension inside the pedal. Really poor design choice imo.
The cleats wear fast
The release point isn't all that definitive

and the reason I won't get more eggbeaters:
They destroy your shoes. The rails on my stainless EBs have worn a groove so deeply behind the heel side of the cleat that the pedal jiggles around and I'm afraid the sole might blow out. Its probably worn away 3mm or more and there is only a wafer thin piece of plastic left. The pedals are super noisy now and barely rideable imo until I buy new shoes. I got the pedals and shoes as a combo for a good deal and have been riding them for 2 years so I can't complain all that much...

I'm looking for a set of ATAC aliums now for replacement.

I have bolts through my feet that I fasten to the pedals before I go out for a ride. No stopping , mmmmkay?

Crank Brothers Stigmata pedals

I rode SPDs with black cleats for about 2-3 months. DO NOT RIDE THEM BRAKELESS! I unclipped 3 or 4 times from skipping and a few other times just from sprinting really hard from a stop. After my last unclip on a steep downhill narrow windy campus road with a car coming the opposite way and having to do the jamaican skid I ordered Time ATAC aliums. No accidental unclips in 7 months.

These Times I have had to service several times tho and the free play setting being a plastic dustcap on the end is really imprecise and cheesy. Makes me want to buy a better model, but still, no unclips.

Or... you could have issues with the way you pedal -- Times have a much broader float range (something like 15 degrees) versus the SPDs. If you have sloppy pedaling technique, then you can "accidentally unclip."

I've been riding SPDs exclusively (brakeless) for about 3 years, and have ridden them offroad for about 7 years prior and have had one unclipping incident when my pedal hit a rock when I was riding mountain.

SPDs are a high-quality system.

this is redundant...but I have vertically unclipped from SPDs twice.
I've have since switched to eggbeaters and other crank brothers pedals and have never unclipped vertically. In that regard they seem more reliable, but like any other pedal, you need to keep them in good working condition and monitor the wear of the pedal and cleat. If you do that you should be fine.

+1. I've unclipped 2 or 3 times in SPDs pulling hard up hills, and the last time I noticed specifically that my foot position was sloppy. the other two times I was drunk. when i *try* to pull out straight up, I can't. I'm pretty sure stories of SPDs unclipping are "by design", that is they are from pulling on the pedal with your foot at an angle without realizing it.

and to the OP: if you are used to SPDs then it should be pretty easy for you to at least give those a try. plenty of people ride them fixed. and as many people have said, make sure and use the black cleats and not the silver ones.

Yeah, double bearings, alu dust/tensioning cup. They are actually cheaper here than the eggbeaters. Still, I broke one.

Time ATAC, Time RXS, Crank Bros anything, Speedplay, Time Pro, Look. All of those are reliable. If you're looking for something you can walk in, the ATAC and Crank Bros pedals are the way to go.

I run spds, if you don't have them set up tight enough they will unclip too easily. If there on tight its ok.
I haven't tried anything else, so i can't say if they are better or worse, but they work.

Crank CANDY C's - ridden em every day for 18 months, never unclipped and they're still going strong!

Yeah it's cheaper stateside, but if you can tell us how to solve having them magically appear half way around the world in our grubby mitts without incurring postage, packing and customs taxation that makes them even more expensive than buying them local... well we'd love to hear your ideas.

do time cleats really last only 4 months? (daily commuter)

Well, the spindle on my left eggbeater sheared at the bolt yesterday putting me down on the ground fairly hard. I won't be buying another crank brother's pedal again. Time to try some ATACs!
