Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

what do you do with one flange and two sprockets?

back story: the dcfixed dudes bought a lot of 60 frames and assorted parts from a local man (thanks, bob buttafuso!). in the lot were several brand new nexus hubs which had been DIY modified. someone had removed the drive-side set of flanges and replaced it with a second sprocket.

the mystery: what do you do with an internal hub with one set of flanges and two sprockets?

my theory: double crankset, two chains, an action figure on each chain. pedal backward. watch it go.

OR maybe he matched gear ratios and torque and was trying to DIY a robot?

i think i might use one to build a rotisserie grill.

Intermediate drive, often used on small wheeled recumbents, to step up the gearing. Can also be used with larger drive wheels to provide W I D E range of gears.

flange as in "rim where spokes attach" or axle nut or surface opposing axle nut? Give us a pic! If you mean rime where spokes attach I'd say the hub was going to be installed in the middle of a solid axle on a tricycle maybe and would never see spokes, w/ a second cog there to double the Nexus gearing by adding a derailluer, something that would be handy on a heavy vehicle, or above a solid axle, with the second cog there to transmit to the axle

i mean flange. i get what willfcc's saying - no wheel to build, just spins around the axle and then two chains on each sprocket. thanks, that makes some sense. damn shame about a brand new nexus hub though.

it's gonna make a tasty chicken!

EDIT: right, "rim where spokes attach." will get pictures. it's all sitting in a backyard in NE DC right now though.

if the rotisserie idea falls through, you could probably do a homemade gearbox dh bike too. but might as well go for the gold!

The innuendo potential of the thread title is doing my head in.

Do you live in DC? If there's any left after all this stuff has been parted out you can have one.

MTB - there was a WC winner with Rolhof hub placed above the bb used as a gearbox. They design managed fixed chain tension on a suspended rear.

My money is on hub for a 3-speed trike.
Sun makes tons of these, the sprocket connects the 3-speed hub to the drive shaft through a small chain, and the hub is not laced to a wheel.

Wow I never would have guessed it was part of a trike. Does this mean we can't use buttafuso as an explicative anymore.
