NJS chains
Anyone ever broke one? Thinking about trying one unless there are stories of em breaking. They look a lot more beefy than these ole KMC that everyone runs. I want something strongz.
Mostly considering HKK or Izumi ones. Also, what about running with the bolt thru link on the street? |
For street use any chain will break because you install it incorrectly or damage it somehow not because there isn't enough metal in it.

I was asking if anyone has any experience with those particular chains. Do you? |
I agree with dutret on this one. If a chain is properly installed, it is not going to break. At least I am sure that I am not strong enough to snap a chain.
|
Anyone?

Get a Wipperman 1G8 and be done with it.

Made in germany is good. Thanks. |
If you search you will find lots of info on izumi chains and on using the bolt through links on the street. If they don't break in a keirin race then you won't break them on the street, unless you install it wrong. As dutret said, that goes for just about any chain.

I'll ask Ryuuno what he runs when I see him at the park. You trust his judgement, right?

You can find them on ebay but not often. Try spelling it "Wipperman"/"Wippermann"/"Wiperman"/"Wipermann" to find different results. Hell, look at the 1G8's description on the box...made for GRINDING. I know how to install a chain, so I'm pretty stoked about it lasting quite a while. However, I do worry it's going to eat the **** out of my chainring and rip it right off...the square plates are HUGE but I love it.
|
I'll send the vote for a Wipperman. Not NJS of course, but I used one for racing on the track as well as riding to and from the track for three years - and the chain looks as good as new. Somehow they feel fast too.
I think a lot of Japanese chains stretch too easily. Izumis only last a few months. That said, I'm running a DID at the moment and it feels good. |
I love love love love love love my Shadow Conspiracy halflink chain. Also designed for grinding and rolls like the smoothest tank tread ever. And you never have to look for a halflink. Hooray!
|
hkk vertex is like $18 in japan... great chain, cheap. why not?
|
Guess what. Even a chain made for grinding that is installed improperly could break! Might as well get an NJS chain because there's a stamp on every link. You could break all aesthetic boundaries by leaving your axle all the way at the back of the track end just to get one more link and thus one more stamp on yr ride. BCHALLIN.

hmmm it seems like chains do break ...and not always because of poor intalation...CaCa happens this photo scared me away from half lnk chain. my njs super toughness chain seems a little quieter than my eco chain |
I wasn't implying the 1G8 couldn't break...it obviously can. I just thought it was funny, because I never heard of a chain that is "made for grinding". I was never a BMXer.
(In skateboarding, however, I've got 18 years experience of "Built To Grind" Independents under my feet.) |

I would avoid Izumi ECO chain, needed retensioning after every ride. Wore out at 700mi. The replacement Connex/Wipperman basic 'star' chain I used has >300mi and hasn't needed retensioning yet.

silly question.. how does one install a chain incorrectly? seems pretty straightforward to me...
