External Bottom Bracket/Cranket for Fixed Gear?

I'm interested in an external bottom bracket and crankset for the weight and stiffness benefits, but I can't seem to find one specifically made for a track bike. Well, I did find one by FSA (I think) that only had a 34 tooth chainring on it.. weird.

I really like the spindle-as-part-of-the-crank design of the DA and Ultegra Shimanos (are all external BB/cranksets like this?), so would I be able to get a proper chainline with the road cranksets available? For the record, I'll be putting it on a Cannondale Capo, which probably has a 42mm chainline, or something close.

Am I right in assuming I could mount one of these in the normal (internal BB) shell that's on the Capo frame? I don't need a special frame/BB shell, right?

Sorry for such a noob question, but external bbs kick ass.

SRAM makes one called the Omnium. Can't find it online, but I have seem em in shops.

Bontrager makes another here.

They're both made by Truvativ and seem to work well for people.

Good luck finding a Truvativ Omnium. SRAM doesn't seem to want to admit that they exist. Maybe on eBay or Craigslist, you'd be able to find someone who removed them from their Pista Concept. And yes, you can put them in your normal bottom bracket shell.

Agreed, and I wonder why. Seems like a great system to have and they'd be the only game in town. I just hope *fingers crossed* the price is reasonable when they do arrive.

Just found this Truvativ Elita track crank. Uses the same Giga X Pipe external BB as the Omnium.

Sells for ~$150 converted from BP, and they say they'll ship anywhere. Definitely worth a look.

Linky here, fourth one down.

Thanks for the link, heads up, and all everyone's help. I'm currently trying to wrangle some similar truvativ's off eBay, because those ones from planet-x are a little bit expensive. But I'll keep them in mind as a backup.

Anyone find something less than $100? Or something for a road that would have a chainline close enough?

Oh, just realized that on one has some for about $80, but they're in 172.5, which is a bit large for me (I run 165 on my other fixie, and 170 on my road bike, both of which seem fine).

Are larger cranks customary for the track? I'll be using this bike for a lot of commuting, and I thought most people ran 165 or so for all things fixie.
