I've been there. I think it was 2 days... like 3 years ago. Without my bike.
Not much help, eh?
I remember we were told not to park out on the street, only in locked garages. Lots of bad roads and buildings in disrepair. Some of my buddies saw a tram derail... at least it's adventurous.
Must have improved a bit since then.
Oh, I managed to think of something relevant! They follow the Italian school of driving there. "If there is nothing heavier than you in front of you, you got metaphorical green light." Which means you gotta keep your eyes peeled at intersections. They just go and trust you to stop in time, even if you have right of way in principle. Maybe they look out for bikers, dunno.

yeah, I was there for about ten days recently (without the bike) and it seemed like a CRAZY city to try and bike in--which is why i thought I'd check here. I really don't want to be without a bike all summer, but I will only really want to bike around if there are other people who do it and say it's do-able.
thanks for the comments, though, they seem spot on with what I observed (ie. insane drivers--they even drive on the sidewalk!) It's a fun city, though, and the roads and buildings seemed pretty good to me. but, then, I'm in NYC so the roads here ain't so hot...
