Shoe Malfunction

On my way home from work this morning I broke my shoe. Sixsixone Launch spd in eggbeater-c's. Skipping down to to a red light on a hill. Skipping almost slowed me to a stop but had to finish up with a somewhat of a hockey stop style skid, not leaning over but really muscling my predominant left foot pulling up hard. I hear this ripping pop sound and first thought I had broke my pedal. Check it.

Has this ever happened to any of you?

It used to happen frequently on early spd style shoes. Havnt seen it in quite a long time. Most shoe companies learned their lesson. They look pretty worn but you may want to try for a warranty replacement....just dont mention you were riding fixed.

Those skate-style shoes typically don't really have very stiff/strong soles, right?

That's scary either way though!

Wow! What are the chances? This same thing happened to me this weekend. I was messing around doing skids Saturday in Central Park. I hopped off the bike to go take a bathroom break and I noticed walking was really uncomfortable. After inspecting the bottom of my shoe (Shimano MA80 with Eggbeater cleats) I noticed most of the rubber sole was ripped up and the metal plate that makes the shoe firm was all twisted and mangled. I was able to carfefully ride home and threw on my clips and straps. My shoes were 2 years old so I got my $40.00 worth.

Ya they weren't so stiff. I actually had a 1/4'' inch hard leather insole cut out my a shoe repairman that I used to improve the stiffness. That actually helped for pedaling but pulling up so hard like I did they of coarse wouldn't make any difference. I think I'll contact the web store and see if they will give me credit and go with some Adidas Minretts. We'll see

Lucky you! I was 3 miles from home and steep hills all the way down. I had to emergency brake it by placing my left shoe up on the tire and seatstays to get me home!

*edit* Just got off the phone with sixsixone. Pretty good customer service. Shipping them to them directly for a replacement pair. I'm seriously going to have to be more careful and not pull up as hard with the new pair. I'm sure it will be better on my knees as well.
